We are pleased to open the Call for Papers for the 18th Researching
and Applying Metaphor Conference (RaAM 18), which will take place at
the University of Navarra (Pamplona, Spain) from June 2 to 4, 2027,
with pre-conference workshops scheduled for the afternoon of June 1,
2027.
Conference Topic and Thematic Lines:
The conference topic is Metaphor, controversies, and mediation.
In times like the present, marked by controversy, public and private
polarization, and large-scale public debate, discussions on the scope
and limits of language to name and describe reality are also on the
rise. In such discussions, words themselves become a ‘battleground’
and a source of controversy—or, conversely, potential spaces for
consensus and social convergence.
In the realm of these debates, metaphor and other forms of figurative
language often occupy a very prominent place. Within this framework,
the conference will especially—but not exclusively—encourage proposals
that explore the following thematic lines.
 - Metaphor and evaluation; metaphor and argumentation
 - Metaphor and manipulation; metaphor and mediation;
(in)visibilization of realities through metaphor
 - Metaphor and euphemism
 - Conscious uses of metaphor; deliberate metaphor theory
 - Resistance to metaphor
 - Metaphor in potentially polarized debates: climate change;
pandemic(s); war contexts; migration; discrimination based on gender,
race, or age; AI and scientific advancements
 - Metaphor within institutional initiatives (glossaries and legal
terminology)
 - Metaphor and social activism
 - Role of linguists in social debates about metaphors
Moreover, alongside the usual critical perspectives on the
(il)legitimate uses of language, the conference will also foster
debates on the constructive potential of metaphor as a tool for
mediation and for promoting and respecting pluralism in society.
Along with these thematic strands, all basic and applied research on
metaphor, metonymy and figurative language traditionally featured in
RaAM conferences and seminars (https://www.raam.org.uk/) will also be
welcome.
Plenary Sessions:
Our plenary speakers will be Christopher Hart (Lancaster University,
United Kingdom), Andrew Goatly (Lingnan University, China) and Iraide
Ibarretxe-Antuñano (University of Zaragoza, Spain).
Two additional plenary sessions will be scheduled at the conference:
 - Interdisciplinary roundtable: “Discussing metaphor in science: New
metaphors for the brain”, coordinated by Javier Bernácer (University
of Navarra, Spain)
 - Plenary discussion session: “From war to common ground: Metaphors
for conflict and cooperation”, coordinated by Dolores Porto
(University of Alcalá, Spain) and Manuela Romano (Complutense
University of Madrid, Spain)
Participation Formats and Submission of Proposals:
We invite proposals for oral presentations, poster presentations, and
themed sessions. Full instructions regarding these participation
formats and the submission of proposals are available in the “Call for
papers and instructions” section of the conference website:
