Issue: Understanding Language Comprehension in Children: A
Neurodiversity-Affirming Perspective
Call Deadline: 01-Jul-2027
Language comprehension is a fundamental aspect of human communication,
yet the ways in which children understand language are remarkably
diverse. Much of the existing literature has approached differences in
children’s language processing through frameworks centered on deficits
or deviations from a presumed neurotypical norm. The growing
recognition of neurodiversity, however, calls for a broader
perspective: one that recognizes and respects variation in cognitive,
linguistic, and communicative processes, and treats variation as an
important source of insight into how language comprehension works.
This Special Issue aims to bring together research that advances our
understanding of language comprehension across diverse
neurodevelopmental profiles. Rather than viewing neurodivergent
language processing solely in terms of limitations or deficits, the
Special Issue embraces the neurodiversity-affirming perspective and
seeks to examine both shared and distinct pathways through which
individuals construct linguistic meaning, integrate contextual
information, make inferences, and participate in communication.
We welcome theoretical, empirical, methodological, and computational
contributions that address language comprehension in neurodivergent
populations, including but not limited to autistic children, children
with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia,
developmental language disorder (DLD), intellectual or learning
disabilities, and other forms of cognitive and communicative
diversity. Studies involving comparisons across neurodivergent and
neurotypical populations are also encouraged when differences are
interpreted with appropriate attention to individual variation and in
relation to what such variation can reveal about the architecture and
development of human language comprehension.
