Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics
Intentionally designed to complement the International Conference on
Ecolinguistics (ICE), the Biennial European Meeting on Ecolinguistics
(BEME) aims to convene scholars and research communities working
across different disciplines. BEME provides a focused space for
scholars who, mainly within Europe’s socio-cultural context, explore
how linguistic and communicative practices shape and affect our
relationship with the more-than-human world. This is particularly
critical in relation to climate change and socio-ecological
transformations which are experienced, represented, and addressed
differently across European regions. BEME aims to foster international
scholarship while developing a distinctive profile through its focus
on Europe, with particular attention to the multilingual realities of
European societies. The first BEME is organized under the theme
“Exploring the disintegration of human-ecological relations:
Ecolinguistic responses to automation, alienation, and crises”. The
focus is not only on the ecological crises and technological change,
but the erosion of human capacity to notice and respond to what is
being/has already been lost. BEME I warmly invites contributions that
explore how language and multimodality function as meaningful
dimensions of the contemporary human-ecological realities, and how
they can help us repair the fractured relationships with ourselves,
others, and the environment. Creative and artistic contributions
relevant to ecolinguistic research are also welcome.
