Scope of Job:
The Department of Writing and Language Studies invites applications
for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Applied
Linguistics to begin Fall 2027. The department seeks a colleague who
can teach across a range of courses in linguistics and TESOL,
supporting our undergraduate English Linguistics, and ESL minors, as
well as our MA in ESL, and MA in English Linguistics. The area of
research specialization is open; we are especially interested in
candidates whose scholarship complements our program offerings and
with the (socio)linguistic landscape of the Rio Grande Valley, a
majority Hispanic, bilingual, and bicultural region shaped by
Spanish-English contact and border culture. The department also places
high value on the thoughtful use of technology in teaching and
research. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and
graduate courses across these programs, mentor and supervise graduate
students, conduct research, and carry out service responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics (or closely related field) from an
accredited institution of higher education. ABDs may be considered,
but a conferred doctorate by August 31, 2027 is required for
appointment. 2) Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in
teaching. 3) Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in
research/scholarship.
Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
at least 18 credit hours or more of graduate level coursework in
linguistics or closely related field
Preferred Qualification:
Teaching and research interests that complement the department's
programs and open to a range of specializations in applied
linguistics. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching diverse
ESL/EFL and multilingual student populations, experience with
technology-enhanced course delivery and research, and an interest in
research related to the multilingual situation of the Rio Grande
Valley region.

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the
position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio
Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office
environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject
to the provisions of the Texas Education Code ยง51.215. The retirement
plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS),
subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional
Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being
40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

Texas law requires faculty members whose primary language is not
English to demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a
satisfactory paper-based test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or
internet-based of 61) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language
(TOEFL) or a satisfactory test score of 6.0 on the International
