Most research on AI and language tests what the model produces. This
workshop asks what multilingual speakers do with it. Generative AI
answers in dozens of languages, yet it organises them like a drop-down
menu: one language at a time, each treated as uniform. Multilingual
speakers move across languages, varieties and registers. What happens
when the two meet?
The workshop brings together empirical work from sociolinguistics,
linguistic anthropology, discourse studies and related fields on what
multilingual speakers do with these systems, what the systems do to
multilingual practices, and whether the concepts we use to describe
multilingual interaction still hold when one participant is a machine.
Contributions are organised around four strands: practices, language
ideologies, concepts, and methods. Ethnographic approaches are
particularly welcome. Data may be in any language.
Keynotes: Bettina Migge (University College Dublin) and Anna
Weichselbraun (University of Vienna)
Organisers: Naomi Truan (Leiden University) and Daniel Knuchel
(University of Zurich)
All contributions are pre-circulated in draft form and discussed in
full during the 1.5-day workshop; the collection is intended for
journal publication. Participation and catering are free of charge;
travel and accommodation may be covered depending on funding.
