OPI-DA: A Dynamic Assessment Approach to Diagnosing Learner Oral

Dr. Jie Zhang and Dr. Tianyu Qin

This webinar introduces OPI-DA, an approach that applies Dynamic
Assessment principles to the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).
Drawing on an ongoing project with U.S. university learners of
Chinese, we will introduce the OPI-DA framework and a three-tier model
of mediation progressing from prompting, to guiding, to modeling.
Through examples from OPI and OPI-DA sessions, we will illustrate how
responsiveness to mediation can provide insights into learners’
emerging oral abilities and consider pedagogical implications for
connecting proficiency assessment with subsequent teaching and
learning.
