Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics; Language Acquisition
Submission Deadline: 15-Feb-2027
Measurement is a fundamental component of rigorous inquiry in Applied
Linguistics. Whether researchers investigate language proficiency and
development, vocabulary and grammar acquisition, classroom interaction
and instructional effectiveness, multilingualism and language use,
learner attitudes and beliefs, or cross-linguistic influence and
language processing, their research claims are shaped by how phenomena
are conceptualized, operationalized, measured, and interpreted.
Measurement involves more than the production of scores or numerical
indicators; it is a means of generating evidence about complex
linguistic, cognitive, social, and communicative phenomena in ways
that are meaningful and trustworthy.
Since the emergence of applied linguistics as a distinct field of
inquiry in the mid-twentieth century, researchers have grappled with
fundamental questions concerning the definition and operationalization
of constructs, the validity and reliability of research instruments,
the accuracy of data collection and analysis, and the interpretation
of findings. These concerns reflect the need to ensure that
measurement procedures adequately represent the underlying abilities,
processes, or characteristics being investigated. Over the decades,
methodological transparency, replication, reproducibility, and the
comparability of findings have also remained central to strengthening
the credibility of research and fostering the cumulative development
of knowledge.
Digital Technologies in recent decades have created new opportunities
to address measurment long-standing concerns. Advances in digital data
collection, automated analysis, corpus-based research, and the
real-time tracking of language use and processing have expanded the
range of phenomena that can be investigated and the ways in which they
can be measured. Such developments facilitate more extensive data
collection, more sophisticated analyses, and greater opportunities for
transparency and reproducibility. However, technological innovation
does not in itself guarantee the quality of measurement.
Technology-mediated approaches raise further questions about the
validity and reliability of new measures, the transparency and
interpretability of automated procedures, fairness across learners and
contexts, data privacy and ethical responsibility. These challenges
make it essential to examine not only what new technologies enable
researchers to measure, but also whether the evidence they generate
provides a valid, reliable, and equitable representation of the
phenomena under investigation.
Against this background, the conference approaches measurement not
merely as a technical concern, but as a fundamental component of
responsible knowledge production in applied linguistics. It seeks to
bring together researchers, educators, and other stakeholders to
examine the theoretical, methodological, empirical, technological, and
ethical dimensions of measurement in research into language-related
phenomena. It invites critical reflection on what researchers measure,
how and how well they measure it, how evidence is interpreted and
used, and what the implications of measurement practices are for
research, education, and policy. Ultimately, the conference aims to
foster dialogue on how current practices contribute to producing
evidence that is valid, reliable, meaningful, transparent,
reproducible, and ethically responsible.
The conference themes include, but are not limited to:
1. Theoretical Dimensions of Measurement:
- Conceptualizing and operationalizing constructs
- Measuring linguistic, cognitive, social, and communicative
phenomena
- Measuring complex and multidimensional phenomena
