Job Title: Research Fellow in Morphological typology
Job Rank: Post Doc
Salary: £38,448 to £45,641 per annum
Minimum Education: PhD
Specialty Areas: Morphology; Typology
Description:
We are seeking qualified applicants for a 2 year position (with
possibility to extend to 4) as Research Fellow (postdoc) in
Morphological Typology on the UKRI FLF grant ‘Scaling predictability
in Morphological paradigms’, led by Sacha Beniamine. The successful
candidate will perform a key role in managing and analysing language
data for the project, and generating novel knowledge. The position is
based at the Surrey Morphology Group at the University of Surrey, in
Guildford, and provides the opportunity to work in the vibrant and
highly collegial research environment for which the SMG is renowned.
The successful candidate will be in charge of the Work Package
focusing on Macro-variation, which aims to improve the current data
coverage to study the range of variation in predictability across
languages.
As a core member of the team, they will use their knowledge of
linguistic typology and morphological variation to define a strategic
sample of languages which will form the empirical basis of the
project. They will coordinate a series of targeted studies on the
selected language sample, and contribute to the large comparative
study of macro-variation in predictability. They will collaborate
closely with the rest of the team in the writing and dissemination of
papers and presentations, and be expected to take initiative in the
formulation of the research agenda.
About you
The successful candidate will have a PhD in linguistics (or related
field), with expertise in both morphology and typology. They will be a
specialist of morphological typology, with past postdoctoral
experience. They will have experience with linguistic data management
and creation, including but not limited to lexical resources. They
will have expert knowledge of the morphology of a specific language or
language family, and curiosity about other systems. Some additional
experience with Romance linguistics and romance diachrony will be
advantageous (facilitate collaboration with the project’s PhD
student).
