Abstract:
Conversation analysis (CA) and language testing and assessment (LTA)
may not seem a likely match, yet CA-based studies have made
substantive contributions to LTA research and practice spanning more
than three decades. These contributions include, among others,
understanding the complex nature of interactional competence (IC),
answering important questions about test format, task type and task
conditions in assessing IC; as well as developing and refining
assessment criteria and score descriptors.
Drawing on a recent research synthesis, this talk provides an overview
of CA-for-LTA studies, noticing patterns of research focuses,
participants and data, and aspects of study design. Taking stock of
contributions to date and current issues and developments in LTA, we
then consider some future avenues where CA and LTA researchers can
further collaborate and strengthen each other’s work.
Whether you are a CA researcher who is assessment-curious, or an LTA
researcher or practitioner wondering what CA can offer to your work,
you are very welcome to join us and contribute to the discussion.
About the Speaker:
Daniel MK Lam is Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in TESOL and
Deputy Leader for the Culture, Communications and Education Research
and Teaching Group at the School of Education, University of Glasgow.
Daniel is known for his research on interactional competence in
language assessments, and developing CA-informed “worked examples”
that can be used by learners, teachers and examiners. His works in the
past few years advocate “interactive listening” as a way of bringing
IC into the teaching and assessment of L2 listening. Daniel’s work
appears in journals such as Applied Linguistics, ELT Journal, Language
Assessment Quarterly, Language Testing, RELC Journal, and Research
Methods in Applied Linguistics. He has also contributed a chapter on
“CA and Language Testing and Assessment” in the Routledge Handbook of
Conversation Analysis. Daniel is an editorial board member for the
journals Classroom Discourse, Language Assessment Quarterly, and
Language Testing. He has also been recently appointed as an Associate
Editor for Applied Linguistics.
