Dissertation Abstract:
Hachijō (八丈, simply called Shima-kotoba 島言葉 or ‘island words’ by its
native speakers) is a critically endangered Japonic variety,
traditionally spoken on the Southern half of the Izu archipelago,
about 300 km South-East of Tōkyō. Its classification within the
Japonic language family is still a matter of debate. This dissertation
aims at contributing to the documentation and preservation of Hachijō,
by proposing a corpus-based panlectal description of its phonology,
lexicon, morphology and syntax, as well as some preliminary
observations toward its classification.
