The PhD program in Linguistics at Indiana University, Bloomington
invites applications for the 2027-28 academic year and is pleased to
announce an online open house: Wednesday, November 11 (1-2 pm, EST).
The French Linguistics program offers a vibrant environment for
French-specific training in core areas of linguistics (syntax,
semantics, morphology, and phonology), as well as courses in the
history of French, language contact, lexicology and lexicography, and
pidgin / creole languages. Our program also focuses on the study of
French as a native and second language in North America, and on
regional languages of France (Picard, Breton, Occitan). We work
closely with the Department of Linguistics and our students take some
of their coursework with faculty in that department. For more
information, including faculty profiles, please visit
https://frit.indiana.edu/graduate/french-linguistics.html
Funding Opportunities: We offer competitive 5-year funding packages in
the form of fellowships and teaching assistantships, complete with
health insurance, monthly stipends, and remission of all tuition and
fees. Our students often receive an additional year of funding through
College of Arts & Sciences and / or University fellowships and awards.
The department also makes available annual funding for research and
travel funds, as well as a competitive, one-semester dissertation
fellowship each spring.
Secondary Specialization Fields: Leveraging the exceptionally broad
range of courses offered by IU’s many other academic units, programs,
and centers, all our doctoral students pursue a PhD Minor in addition
to their French degree. Recent PhD minors completed include:
Anthropology, Art History, African Studies, Comparative Literature,
Critical Theory, Cultural Studies, Media Studies, Gender Studies,
Latin-American & Caribbean Studies, Media Studies, and Renaissance
Studies.
Professional Development: In addition to comprehensive pedagogical
training, we offer professionalization workshops and forums, and
foster student-faculty collaborations. PhD students are involved in
graduate student government, gain experience planning conferences, and
facilitate co-curricular activities. Our Walter Center for Career
Achievement prepares graduate students for alternative professional
tracks outside academia.
Life in Bloomington: With a population of 80,000 residents,
Bloomington is a picturesque college town that features a diverse,
lively, and multicultural community, active art, food, and music
scenes, as well as an historic campus that is nationally recognized
for its beauty. Located less than an hour from a major international
airport in Indianapolis served by all major US carriers, Bloomington
is a safe, affordable, and convenient place to live. Come see all that
Bloomington has to offer! Funding is available for accepted applicants
to visit campus each spring.
Where will IU take you? Our PhD programs have an excellent job
placement record. Recent full-time academic placements include: Ball
State University, Baylor University, Binghamton University, Colby
College, Davidson College, Hanover College, Kennesaw State University,
Kenyon College, Rice University, St. Lawrence University, University
