The study of Ancient Greek grammar has a long and distinguished
tradition, dating back to the earliest stages of linguistic inquiry.
In recent years, however, the field has undergone significant
transformation. New approaches increasingly integrate insights from
general linguistics and various language sciences –most notably
linguistic typology, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics– while also
benefiting from technological advances such as the development of
digital corpora, treebanks, and computational tools for data
processing and analysis.
The aim of New Ways of Analyzing Ancient Greek (nwaag) is to support
and further develop these directions by fostering a network of
linguists committed to empirically grounded and theoretically
innovative approaches to Ancient Greek. Bringing together scholars
from different traditions, this conference promotes dialogue between
theoretical, philological, and computational perspectives. The present
conference addresses two central questions:
 - How can the study of Ancient Greek be advanced through engagement
with developments in the wider scientific landscape, both within and
beyond the humanities?
 - What contributions can Ancient Greek make to current linguistic
theory and to cross-linguistic generalizations?
nwaag hosts contributions from all areas of modern linguistics,
including phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and
sociolinguistics as well as work at their interfaces. We particularly
encourage contributions that combine philological expertise with
formal, typological, or computational approaches. Participants are
expected to present findings in their areas of expertise covering the
study of Greek language across all levels of analysis.
New Ways of Analyzing Ancient Greek 3 (nwaag^3) is the third
installment in a conference series (Göttingen 2019, Athens 2024) that
has successfully brought together researchers from different career
stages working in different countries and with interdisciplinary
backgrounds. The series has contributed to the formation of an
international network dedicated to empirical and analytical
advancements in the study of Ancient Greek in line with contemporary
developments in linguistics and humanities. In addition to
corpus-based and theorethical studies, nwaag3 particularly welcomes
the discussion of new digital resources for the study of Ancient
Greek.
We invite submissions of abstracts for oral presentations (scheduled
for 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes for discussion). Abstracts
should not exceed 500 words, including references and examples, and
should be submitted as PDF files to [nwaag3-lecce at unisalento.it].
Please include the names of all authors in the body of the submission
email, but anonymize the submitted file and do not include author
information in the abstract itself.
