Call for Papers:
The way Korean is taught, learned, and used is undergoing rapid and
multidirectional change. The emergence of artificial intelligence is
reshaping pedagogical practice and raising new questions for concepts
such as language competence, learner agency, and the boundaries
between human and machine-mediated communication. At the same time,
Korean language classrooms around the world are becoming increasingly
multilingual spaces, in which learners' multicompetencies, linguistic,
multimodal, and semiotic, are increasingly foregrounded, and in which
a growing number of teachers are themselves non-native speakers of
Korean. This is accompanied by the ongoing rise of multilingualism
within South Korea itself, as increasing linguistic diversity
continues to shape Korean society and education. Alongside these
developments, new advances in pedagogy continue to open up fresh
possibilities for practice. Taken together, these shifts call for
Korean language education and applied linguistics to be responsive and
adaptive and to be conceived, in other words, in terms of multiplicity
and diversity rather than a single, fixed approach.
What does it mean, then, to approach Korean applied linguistics
through a “multi” lens? This online symposium brings together
researchers and educators to explore multiple intelligences, multiple
languages, and multiple approaches in Korean applied linguistics, with
a particular focus on Korean language education.
Multiple Intelligences:
Exploring the relationship between human and artificial intelligence
(AI) in language education — including AI-assisted teaching and
learning, generative AI tools, machine translation, and the
opportunities and challenges these technologies raise for language
pedagogy and research.
Multiple Languages:
Multilingualism, translanguaging, and language contact, and how
multiple languages can enrich Korean language learning and teaching.
Multiple Approaches:
New, innovative, or alternative approaches to teaching Korean —
pedagogical practices, technologies, multimodal approaches, curriculum
design, and emerging directions in language education.
We particularly welcome contributions that cross or connect these
themes, bringing together multiple perspectives, methodologies,
languages, or pedagogical approaches.
Abstracts: We invite researchers, educators, and graduate students to
submit abstracts of up to 200 words (excluding references) for
research presentations and pedagogical/practice-based contributions.
Submissions should include a presentation title, author name(s),
institutional affiliation(s), contact email address, and 3–5 keywords.
Submitters will also be asked to indicate which symposium theme(s)
their proposal closely relates to: Multiple Intelligences, Multiple
Languages, and/or Multiple Approaches.
Presentations will be approximately 15–20 minutes, with additional
time for Q&A. Final presentation times will be confirmed after the
program is finalized.
Submission deadline: 1 December 2026, 11:59 p.m. EST / 2 December
2026, 3:59 p.m. AEDT
Notification of acceptance: 14 December 2026, via email
