Subject: Webinar: "How Many Languages Can a Baby Absorb from Birth? A Case Study" by Professor Jean-Marc Dewaele

You are warmly invited to attend an online academic seminar organised
as part of the collaboration between VISION - European Center for
Multilingualism in Teacher Education and Didactic Excellence Office
(DEO):
“How many languages can a baby absorb from birth? A case study”
November 3rd, 2026
11:00 AM – 12:30 PM (CET)
Hybrid (room 234, 59 Okopowa Street, Vizja Park – Warsaw/online)–
conducted in English
Meeting link:
https://zoom.us/j/99501407370
The keynote will be delivered by Prof. Jean-Marc Dewaele, a leading
scholar in multilingualism, and will be attended by members of VISION
and representatives of DEO.
Jean-Marc Dewaele is Professor at VIZJA University, Honorary Professor
at University College London and Emeritus Professor at Birkbeck,
University of London. Prof. Dewaele has published widely on emotion
and individual differences in language learning. He is General Editor
of the Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development. He won
Research Awards from the British Association for Counselling and
Psychotherapy, the International Association of Language and Social
Psychology, the European Second Language Association and the
International Association for the Psychology of Language Learning. He
was ranked as the 2nd most influential linguist in the world in the
Stanford rankings 2025.
During the seminar Prof. Dewaele will explore a common misconception
that children should grow up with a single language before attempting
to learn extra languages later in life. Immigrants are often wrongly
advised to drop their home languages in favour of the school language,
which they may master imperfectly. In this lecture he will refer to
the growing literature on children who acquired multiple languages
from birth and flourished. The consistent finding is that early
multilingualism does not have negative effects on academic performance
nor integration. On the contrary, it is linked to cognitive, social
and psychological advantages that last a lifetime. He will illustrate
this with the case of his daughter Livia who grew up with four
languages from birth (Festman et al., 2017).
The seminar will be conducted in a hybrid mode. It will take place in
room 234 (2nd floor) and it will be streamed live and recorded. The
recording may be made available on the websites of VIZJA University
and on its social media channels. Participation in the event
constitutes acknowledgement that the seminar is being recorded.
Sharing one’s image and voice is voluntary – participants may take
part in the meeting without turning on their camera and/or microphone.

participants.
