Subject: Participants Needed - Norwegian Tonal Accents


My PhD project investigates the acquisition and representation of
Norwegian prosody among Norwegian speakers, with a particular focus on
tonal accents. Norwegian is characterized by a contrast between two
tonal accents which are anchored in word stress. The stressed
syllables in Norwegian can be prosodically realized in two ways,
resulting in Accent 1 and Accent 2 contrast, which further varies by
dialect and which in some cases can differentiate word meanings
through distinct tonal patterns on stressed syllables, such as 1tanken
‘the tank’ vs. 2tanken ‘the thought’.
I am looking for participants with Norwegian as first second language,
and Urban East Norwegian dialect.
The participation entails two tasks: a perception and a production
task.
Perception task:
For each trial, the participants will hear three stimuli in sequence,
the first two stimuli (A and B) will consist of the same word
pronounced with Accent 1 and 2. The third stimulus (X) will be either
the Accent 1 or Accent 2 version, and participants will indicate which
one it matches.
Production task:
A variety of sentences will be presented, and the participants will be
expected to produce/read the sentences.
The tasks will be conducted in person in Oslo, and will take around
30-40 minutes.
