We are pleased to announce a call for papers for the workshop
Visibility in Translation – Exploring Fantasy within the Annual
International Conference of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and
Literatures, University of Bucharest. Our aim is to investigate the
role of translators as visible or invisible agents in the adaptation
and dissemination of fantasy literature across linguistic and cultural
boundaries. Drawing on foundational concepts such as Venuti’s notion
of the translator's invisibility, we seek contributions that examine
how translators navigate the unique challenges of fantasy texts –
where invented worlds, magical systems, neologisms, and cultural
mythologies demand creative interventions that either foreground or
obscure the translator's hand. Fantasy, as a genre rich in imaginative
world-building (e.g., J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, Ursula K. Le
Guin’s Earthsea, or N.K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth series), poses
distinct translation dilemmas. How do translators make visible the
cultural specificities of source texts while ensuring accessibility in
target languages? In what ways does the genre’s emphasis on immersion
amplify or mitigate the translator’s visibility? This workshop invites
interdisciplinary explorations from translation studies, literary
translation, lexicology, terminology, and related fields, with a
primary focus on fantasy works but open to comparative insights from
adjacent speculative genres.
