Queer linguistics has developed considerably over the past two
decades. From its early interest in documenting particular lexicons
and sociolects, the field has moved towards a critical examination of
heteronormativity and, more recently, the development of trans
linguistics. This theoretical consolidation, however, has not always
been accompanied by equally systematic methodological reflection.
How can we rigorously investigate the relationship between language,
gender and sexuality without treating as fixed the very categories
that queer approaches seek to question?
This panel places that question at the centre of discussion. Rather
than focusing only on what we know about language, gender and
sexuality, it asks how that knowledge is produced and what
methodological and epistemological consequences follow from our
research choices.
We welcome empirical and theoretical contributions addressing
methodological questions across different areas of linguistic
research. Relevant topics include the definition, classification and
operationalisation of gender and sexuality as variables; the risk of
reproducing binary categories through research design; the
relationship between quantitative, variationist and experimental
methods and critical or anti-essentialist approaches; sampling and
participant recruitment; questionnaire and experimental design,
including how researchers ask participants about gender and sexuality;
researcher reflexivity and positionality; and ethical questions
understood as integral components of methodology.
We are also interested in how different research traditions, including
discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, experimental and perceptual
phonetics, interactional analysis and ethnography, negotiate the
relationship between constructing and measuring their objects of
study.
Particular attention will be given to Spanish and Hispanic contexts.
Much of the methodological and theoretical literature in queer
linguistics has emerged from Anglophone scholarship, raising questions
about its theoretical, terminological and empirical transferability to
research on Spanish and other Hispanic contexts. This includes the
relationship between queer and cuir as analytical traditions and
terms.
The panel therefore seeks to bring together researchers working from
different theoretical and methodological perspectives in order to
foster a more methodologically self-aware and rigorous queer/cuir
linguistics.
Practical Information:
The panel will take place as part of the LV Symposium of the Spanish
Society of Linguistics (SEL), held at the University of Alcalá, Alcalá
de Henares, Spain, from 18 to 21 January 2027.
Abstracts should be no longer than 500 words, including references,
and should follow the template provided on the conference website.
Oral presentations will consist of 20 minutes for presentation
followed by 10 minutes for discussion. Authors must indicate in the
submission form that their proposal is intended for the panel
“Language, Gender and Sexuality: Methodological and Epistemological
Challenges in Queer/Cuir Linguistics.”
Submission deadline: 30 September 2026.
Notification of acceptance: 31 October 2026.
Proposals must be submitted through the SEL2027 submission system.
