Glossa: A Journal of General Linguistics invites submissions to a new
Special Collection, Pitch at the Language–Music Interface, arising
from the satellite workshop of the same theme at LabPhon 20. The
Collection is edited by Vincent Nwosu (University of Calgary), Kathryn
Franich (Harvard University), and Darin Flynn (University of Calgary).
Pitch sits at the heart of both language and music, yet the two are
usually studied apart. This Collection examines parallels between
linguistic pitch, prosody, and musical structure, and what their
interaction reveals about the two systems. Drawing on experimental,
acoustic, perceptual, articulatory, and corpus studies across diverse
languages and traditions, it asks how tonal and prosodic contrasts are
preserved, modified, and redistributed when linguistic and musical
demands compete.
We welcome empirical, theoretical, and methodological contributions
with implications for linguistic theory, on topics including but not
limited to: tone–melody correspondence and text-setting; the
representation of tone, register, and prominence; musical surrogate
speech as phonological evidence; pitch scaling and perception across
speech and song; and the shared cognitive foundations of language and
music. Work on under-represented languages is especially welcome.
