Dissertation Abstract:

Geographical names exist in all natural languages, serving several
purposes. As intangible heritage, they define identities and organize
societies, converting space into place through naming. As
georeferencing agents, they particularize these same places. As
lexical units, they seek univocal graphic associability, orthographic
validation, and stability. Respecting the maxim of
mono-referentiality, each geographical referent should have an
exclusive name. However, human languages have particularities that
make it impossible to respect this maxim, motivating endonymic
variation and, especially, exonymic variation. In this dissertation we
seek to deepen the knowledge associated with the object ‘geographical
name’, describing general characteristics and particularities of the
toponymy of Portuguese – as a pluricentric language –, specifically of
Portuguese from Portugal. We address formal properties, such as
grammatical gender; as well as some issues regarding terminology,
typology, taxonomy, semantic status, spelling, abbreviation,
standardization (endonymic and exonymic) or toponymic management,
including possible scopes of application. Considering the data in this
study and the recommendations from the United Nations Group of Experts
on Geographical Names (UNGEGN), we present a model of Toponymic
Guidelines for Geographical Names in Portugal (TG-PT) and a proposal
for a National Authority for Geographical Names in Portugal (NAGN-PT)
that includes onomasticians. For the future, we expect that this TG-PT
proposal and a NAGN-PT serve as models for the CPLP, motivating
similar proposals, both at national and community levels.
