Abstract:

While the literature in World Englishes continues to grow, there is
clearly a corresponding gap in the literature on African Englishes,
which is certainly the core of most debates within the field of World
Englishes, and the related subfields. In other words, in the discourse
of World Englishes, African Englishes are being very much left behind
or have been moved to the periphery. Whereas this should be the other
way around given the number, and spread of its users across the globe,
and vital functions these varieties play in the socio-political,
economic, and cultural lives of the users. Hence,  the scholarship and
debate on World Englishes can benefit from a stronger scholarship of
African Englishes, notwithstanding their economic and political
circumstances in the global ranking of things. As of now, only a
handful of resources on African Englishes is available. Robust
resources that continually document an infinite set of uses, usages,
including creativity and innovations, in various African Englishes,
are required, and to which this proposed book further adds.
