The aims of the PAC programme (Phonologie de l’Anglais Contemporain:
usages, variétés et structure - The Phonology of Contemporary English:
usage, varieties and structure) can be summarized as follows: to give
a better picture of spoken English in its unity and diversity
(geographical, social and stylistic); to test existing theoretical
models in phonology, phonetics and sociolinguistics from a synchronic
and diachronic point of view, making room for the systematic study of
variation; to favour communication between specialists in speech and
in phonological theory; and to provide corpus-based data and analyses
which will help improve the teaching of English as a foreign language.

The 18th edition of the PAC international conference will be organized
around two days of plenary and thematic sessions focusing on the
issues detailed hereafter. We welcome submissions that address, but
are not limited to, these topics. Submissions need not be limited to a
single thematic session either and may encompass issues from different
themes.
 - Ongoing changes in contemporary varieties of English, both standard
and non-standard, including phonetic, phonological, and prosodic
variation and its interfaces with the lexicon, pragmatics, and
morphosyntax. In particular, the effects of social, regional, and
stylistic factors on sociolinguistic variation in the English-speaking
world.
 - The ways non-linguists and members of communities of practice
perceive, divide, and map out sociolinguistic variation and dialect
continua in contemporary English. In particular, which linguistic
(phonetic, phonological, prosodic, etc.) features and a priori
categories do non-linguists rely on.
 - The interplay between sociolinguistic distinctions that are
meaningful to speaker-listeners (emic forms of categorization) on the
one hand, and those that are relevant
to researchers (etic forms of categorization). For instance, whether
socially/regionally diagnostic sociolinguistic variables are
contrastive from the perspective of linguists or from that of
speaker-listeners themselves.
 - Metalinguistic discourse, attitudes, beliefs, and representations
of speaker-listeners regarding speech patterns. Namely, how ideologies
are constructed and elaborated to give meaning to ongoing
sociolinguistic variation.
 - Second language acquisition of English and the evolution of L2
speakers’ sociolinguistic skills, both production and perception-wise.
In particular, issues regarding the mastering of phonetic proficiency,
phonological contrasts, as well as stereotypes and attitudes regarding
variation in English.
 - The use of voice-recognition software, large language models
(LLMs), or AI software in the study of language variation; in
particular, the issues they raise regarding regional/non-standard
varieties and the reflection/diffusion of language attitudes and
stereotypes.
