Description:
The Neurolinguistics & Language Processing Lab and the KU Phonetics &
Psycholinguistics Lab at the University of Kansas seek applications
from prospective PhD students who are interested in studying the
psychological representation and processing of language, especially
(but not limited to) the perception and mental organization of sounds.
Dr. Stephen Politzer-Ahles (Department of Linguistics) is accepting
applications for a Graduate Research Assistant position working in
neurolinguistics and psycholinguistics. The Graduate Research
Assistant would work with Dr. Politzer-Ahles on developing, carrying
out, and presenting/publishing studies using psycholinguistic and
neurolinguistic techniques to investigate the perception and mental
organization of sounds.
To be eligible, applicants should wish to pursue a Ph.D. degree in
Linguistics and have had experience with designing and carrying out
experimental studies (ideally demonstrated through a thesis, external
presentations or papers, honors project, or capstone project). A
background with event-related potentials (ERP) research is preferred
but not required. The Graduate Research Assistant will be responsible
for participant recruiting, participant testing, undergraduate
research assistant supervision and training, data processing and
analysis, and the preparation of conference presentations and papers
for publication. Interested applicants should follow the standard
procedures for applying to the Ph.D. program in Linguistics at the
University of Kansas (deadline of December 2):

financial support.
Please contact Dr. Stephen Politzer-Ahles (sjpa at ku.edu) if you are
interested in the position or if you have any questions.
About Linguistics at the University of Kansas
The Linguistics Department at KU is a unique program that specializes
in uniting linguistic theory and experimental research. We have
particular strengths in experimental phonetics and phonology, first
and second language acquisition, developmental psycholinguistics,
second language psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics,
sociolinguistics, the cognitive neuroscience of language, linguistic
fieldwork, and theoretical semantics. Our faculty members and graduate
students study a broad range of languages including understudied
language varieties in Asia and the Americas. The department has six
active research labs, which have all successfully competed for
external funding and provide support for graduate studies. The
department has both head-mounted and remote eye trackers, an EEG
laboratory, and on the KU medical center campus, cortical MEG, fetal
MEG and MRI systems. We offer both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. The
Linguistics faculty is committed to excellence in mentoring and
provides support for graduate students in several ways including
weekly research seminars and frequent opportunities for advising.
Students are actively encouraged and mentored to present their work at
conferences, publish research in journals, and submit applications for
external grant funding. For more information, please see our website:
