Job Title: Postdoctoral Fellow
Job Rank: Post Doc
Salary: $91,260

Minimum Education: PhD

Specialty Areas: Phonetics; Psycholinguistics; Sociolinguistics

Other Specialties: Ultrasound imaging, laboratory phonology
Description:
The New Zealand Institute of Language, Brain and Behaviour is seeking
a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the team of researchers working on a
project funded by the Royal Society of New Zealand Marsden Fund,
entitled “What is a phoneme, and how many does New Zealand English
have?” The research team comprises Professor Jen Hay, Associate
Professor Lynn Clark (University of Canterbury) and Emeritus Professor
Jim Scobbie (Queen Margaret University, Scotland).
The project focuses on the analysis of vowels before /l/ in New
Zealand English. This is a site of multiple potential phonemic mergers
and splits, and the phonemic inventory is unclear. We will use
ultrasound imaging of the tongue, acoustic analysis, perception
experiments and free classification experiments to investigate the
full inventory of NZE vowels before /l/. We are interested in the
relationship between production, perception and categorisation, and
what these can tell us about the process through which new phonemes
emerge. Applications are invited from researchers with expertise in
one or more of the following areas:
Ultrasound imaging, sociophonetics, speech perception experiments,
psycholinguistics, and laboratory phonology.
To be considered for this role you will hold a PhD in Linguistics with
demonstrated skills in statistical analysis and experimental design.
However, all interested candidates with a background in one or more of
the research areas are encouraged to apply.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will be employed by the New Zealand Institute
of Language, Brain and Behaviour, University of Canterbury and will be
required to relocate to Christchurch. The start date is February 2027,
but it is negotiable.
