Your Task: Your core task is the integration of a cognitively founded WWW summarization system, using some ready-made components and developing other subsystems from scratch. The job has also empirical perspectives in formative evaluation. Student research assistants will help you. Your Qualifications: We expect a solid computer science education. A PhD is fine, but not strictly necessary. You will need WWW technologies, programming skills and your background in AI and/or computational linguistics. If you are interested in medicine and hospital information systems - all the better. Working Conditions and Contract: You will join a distributed interdisciplinary team at the University of the Applied Sciences and the Medical School of Hanover in Northern Germany. Your physical working place will be at the Medical School. English is acceptable as a working language. We want to hire a qualified and motivated colleague as soon as possible. The salary follows the normal BAT IIa rate for researchers in German public service. It is sensitive to age, marital status and number of children. The contract covers two years. Since the project is supported by the Ger-man Science Foundation (DFG), some specific DFG conditions apply. We intend to pursue the approach till application. Some Essentials of System Development: We are beginning a cognitively founded WWW summarization system for Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT), a highly specialized field of internal medicine: - The system language is English, with some limited German search facilities. - Summarization is supported by an ontology of the domain. We develop it empirically, starting with a corpus of recent BMT papers, then testing and expanding the ontology in its application environment. - Cognitively founded agents perform the core summarization tasks. They cooperate in a blackboard model. Most of them are known from earlier research, but not yet fit for real-world application. Domain-specific agents must be added. - Third party components - parser, RST analysis - are integrated. We search the WWW and Medline, we exploit UMLS, WordNet and other resources. - The target system will run on a Mac and Sun platform. WWW access starts with Mac OS tools. Our own summarization agents will be programmed in LISP. - We adhere to the principles of user-centered system design. Users have participated in project design from the early beginnings. The research to be carried out will form part of the research program `Information, Language and Knowledge (ITK)' of the CL&AI Unit, which investigates the formal and computational aspects of how information expressed in natural language can be represented, learned, processed, and communicated. It is situated in the interdisciplinary area where cognitive science, linguistics, computer science, logic and artificial intelligence converge. 1. COMPUTATIONAL SEMANTICS/PRAGMATICS OR HCI ASPECTS OF DIALOGUE Associated with this position is a project, referred to as `Project CSP/HCI-2000', for investigating semantic and pragmatic aspects of natural language or multimodal dialogue, in relation to previous and ongoing research on computational semantics and pragmatics and on cooperative multimodal communication in the CL & AI Unit. A detailed project plan will be developed during the initial phase of the project. Proposals for innovative Ph.D. projects that may not quite fit the outline of the CSP/HCI-2000 project, but that do fit within the larger ITK program, are also welcome. Requirements ------------ Applicants should have a good honours degree (or equivalent) in computational linguistics, cognitive science, or computer science, preferably with a background in semantics/pragmatics and with an interest in human-computer interaction. For further information contact Harry Bunt at bunt at kub.nl, or telephone +31-13 466 30 60. Applications may be made by email to bunt at kub.nl The following two positions are both related to joint projects of the CL & AI Unit at Tilburg University and the Center of Research on User-System Interaction IPO at Eindhoven University of Technology, and are sponsored by the Agency for Tilburg-Eindhoven Inter-University Cooperation (SOBU). 2. SPOKEN DIALOGUE SYSTEM PRAGMATICS This position concerns the project `CONTEXT-DRIVEN DIALOGUE MANAGEMENT FOR SPOKEN HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION', which aims at investigating to what extent spoken human-computer communication can benefit from the advantages known from spoken human-human communication. Natural spoken dialogue is interlarded with elements that serve to create and maintain the conditions for smooth and successful communication. Such elements are called `dialogue control acts' and include various types of feedback acts, `interaction management acts' that signal, prevent or repair misunderstandings and other possible problems in the interaction, and `social obligation management acts' that help to make the interaction pleasant and cooperative. The project will study the desirability and the possibility of using dialogue control acts of the various categories, and strategies of using them known from natural human communication. The project will combine theoretical analysis and experimental study with prototype implementation in a dialogue system based on state-of-the-art speech technology and on the DenK system for multimodal (text + graphics) dialogue, developed jointly at the universities in Tilburg and Eindhoven. At IPO in Eindhoven the research is integrated with the `Spoken Dialogue Systems' research program. Project leaders are Prof.dr. Harry Bunt (Tilburg University) and Dr. Raymond Veldhuis (Eindhoven University of Technology). Requirements ------------ Applicants should have a good honours degree (or equivalent) in computational linguistics, cognitive science, or computer science, preferably with a background in pragmatics and in logic programming, and with an interest in human-computer interaction. For further information contact Harry Bunt at bunt at kub.nl, or telephone +31-13 466 30 60. Applications may be made by email to bunt at kub.nl 3. LEARNING TO COMMUNICATE: MACHINE LEARNING OF DIALOGUE STRATEGIES This position concerns the project `LEARNING TO COMMUNICATE: MACHINE LEARNING OF DIALOGUE STRATEGIES', of which the goal is to test whether (memory-based) machine learning systems can reach accurate decisions in taking turns in dialogues. Conducting a dialogue is a complex process that is hard to lay down in rules. When the computer is to be a dialogue partner, it is nevertheless necessary to have some generic model of the structure of dialogues. In this project, the task of finding such a model is assigned to machine learning systems, who learn on the basis of large amounts of example dialogues. The underlying idea (bias) of these systems is that earlier dialogues can be good models for new dialogues. In a new dialogue, the next step taken by the computer will be the same as the step made at that point in the most similar dialogue(s) it has seen before, and which have led to success in those cases. The Induction of Linguistic Knowledge group (http://ilk.kub.nl) within the CL&AI unit has been working since 1992 on the development of machine learning methods for natural language processing. It has thus far focused its research efforts on morpho-phonology, syntax, and lexical semantics, and is looking forward to meet the dialogue domain -- which has been a long-standing focal point of research and expertise of the IPO in Eindhoven. Project leaders are Dr. Antal van den Bosch (Tilburg University) and Dr. Emiel Krahmer (Eindhoven University of Technology). Requirements ------------ Applicants should have a good honours degree (or equivalent) in computational linguistics, cognitive science, or computer science, preferably with a background in corpus linguistics and/or pragmatics. For further information contact Antal van den Bosch at Antal.vdnBosch at kub.nl, or telephone +31-13 466 3117. The theme for the 2001 conference is "Digital Media and Humanities Research", and it will feature plenary addresses by two leading scholars: Johanna Drucker, Robertson Professor in Media Studies at the University of Virginia, and Alan Liu, Professor of English at the University of California, Santa Barbara. ACH/ALLC 2001 invites submissions of between 750 and 1500 words on any aspect of humanities computing or new media, broadly defined to encompass the common ground between information technology and problems in humanities research and teaching. We especially encourage submissions from any field which address the impact of new media on research methods and intellectual practices. As always, we welcome submissions in any area of the humanities, especially interdisciplinary work. Other areas of interest include the creation and use of digital resources, theoretical or speculative treatments of new media, and the application to humanities data of techniques developed in such fields as information science and the physical sciences and engineering. Successful proposals might focus on: * new approaches to research in humanities disciplines using digital resources dependent on images, audio, or video; * traditional applications of computing in the humanities, including (but not limited to) text encoding, hypertext, text corpora, computational lexicography, statistical models, and text analysis; * applications in the digital arts, especially projects and installations that feature technical advances of potential interest to humanities scholars; * information design in the humanities, including visualization, simulation, and modeling; * pedagogical applications of new media within the humanities; thoughtful considerations of the cultural impact of computing and new media; * the institutional role of humanities computing and new media within the contemporary academy, including curriculum development and collegial support for activities in these fields. Financial assistance for some speakers will be available: see the conference web page for details. For the first time the conference will also feature a workshop session on academic and industry jobs in humanities computing and new media. Maximum entropy has been shown again and again to yield state-of-the-art results in numerous natural language applications. However, successful maximum entropy models tend to be extremely large, and frequently contain thousands of parameters. They also tend to be monolithic, and hard to maintain. Instead of building monolithic maximum entropy models, this project will investigate ways of building models that can be factored into individual 'experts'. Each expert will be a small maximum entropy model that is tailored to some aspect of the task. The overall model will then consist of a combination of these experts. It is expected that the resulting combined model will not only be compact, but will also be better than any of the individual component models. The domain for the project will parse selection: taking a large unification-based grammar, parsing the Wall Street Journal, and then building a combined model that decides which is the preferred parse. See www.cogsci.ed.ac.uk/~osborne/coling2.ps for background details about the task. The student will work with Dr Miles Osborne (osborne at cogsci.ed.ac.uk, www.cogsci.ed.ac.uk/~osborne). It is expected that the student will collaborate with the Institute for Adaptive and Neural Computation (http://www.anc.ed.ac.uk) at Edinburgh and the Natural Language Group at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory. Candidates should have, or expect to obtain, a good degree in a numerate subject (such as, but not limited to, mathematics, computer science or engineering). Knowledge of natural language processing will be a plus. The project is funded for three years and is open to all suitable applicants of any nationality. It covers all fees and maintenance. Applications will be considered until the post is filled. The intended start is the beginning of January, but this can be negotiated. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Dr. Miles Osborne (osborne at cogsci.ed.ac.uk) or telephone +44 (0)131 650 4430 after the 1st of October. The deadline for submissions of paper/session proposals is 15 November 2000; the deadline for submissions of poster/demo proposals is 15 January 2000. See http://www.nyu.edu/its/humanities/ach_allc2001/ for full details on submitting proposals and on the conference in general. ___________________________________________________________________ Message diffus? par la liste Langage Naturel Informations, abonnement : http://www.biomath.jussieu.fr/LN/LN-F/ English version : http://www.biomath.jussieu.fr/LN/LN/ Archives : http://web-lli.univ-paris13.fr/ln/ From pb at lpl.univ-aix.fr Mon Sep 25 11:33:40 2000 From: pb at lpl.univ-aix.fr (Philippe Blache) Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 13:33:40 +0200 Subject: Divers: Résumés de thèses dans TAL Message-ID: From: anne.condamines at univ-tlse2.fr (Anne CONDAMINES) Bonjour, Vous avez la possibilit? de faire para?tre votre r?sum? de th?se dans la revue TAL (d?sormais ?dit?e par Hermes).
