Cette journee, organisee par l'Association Francaise de Linguistique
Appliquee en association avec les Departements LEA et LLCE de
l'Universite de Bretagne Sud, le Centre de Recherche en Litteratures,
Linguistique Civilisations (CRELLIC) et le groupe Analyse Linguistique
et Pratiques Langagieres (ALPL), se veut un lieu de rencontre entre
tous ceux qui s'interessent a la linguistique de corpus du point de
vue des applications de la linguistique : chercheurs en linguistique,
enseignants de langues, traducteurs et lexicographes.  Il s'agira
d'offrir un forum d'echange d'experiences a ceux qui travaillent sur
des corpus textuels plutot que sur le developpement d'outils
informatiques. La journee prendra la forme d'exposes sur des travaux
en cours, sous forme de posters affiches ou d'interventions orales, et
s'achevera par une table ronde sur les perspectives de developpement
de cette discipline en France.

La journee s'adresse principalement aux chercheurs et enseignants
interesses par l'utilisation de l'informatique comme outil d'analyse
et utilisant des corpus electroniques pour l'etude lexicographique, la
traduction ou l'enseignement des langues.  Vous aurez la possibilite
de presenter vos travaux sous forme de communication affichee, par
poster d'environ 1m2 ou sous forme d'intervention orale d'une
vingtaine de minutes.

The Third International Conference on Language
Resources and Evaluation is organised by ELRA
in cooperation with other Associations and Consortia,
including ACL, AFNLPA, ALLC, CLASS, COCOSDA,
ORIENTAL COCOSDA, EAFT, EAGLES/ISLE,
ELSNET, ENABLER, EURALEX, FRANCIL, ISCA,
LDC, ONTOWEB, PAROLE, etc., and with major
national and international organisations, including
the Commission of the EU  Information Society DG,
DARPA, NSF, and the Japanese Project for International
Co-ordination of East-Asian Spoken Language Resources
and Evaluation. Co-operation with other organisations is
currently being sought.

CONFERENCE AIMS

In the framework of the Information Society, the pervasive
character of Human Language Technologies (HLT) and
their relevance to practically all the fields of Information
Society Technologies (IST) has been widely recognised.

Two issues are considered particularly relevant: the
availability of language resources and the methods for
the evaluation of resources, technologies, products and
applications. Substantial mutual benefits can be expected
from addressing these issues through international cooperation.

The term language resources (LR) refers to sets of language
data and descriptions in machine readable form, used  e.g.
for: building and evaluating natural language, speech and
multimodal algorithms or systems, software localisation
industries and language services, language enabled
information and communication services, natural interactivity,
knowledge management, electronic commerce, electronic
publishing, language studies, subject-area specialists and end
users.

Examples of linguistic resources are written, spoken and
multimodal corpora and lexica, grammars, terminology databases,
multimedia databases, basic software tools for the acquisition,
preparation, collection, management, customisation and use of
these and other resources.

The relevance of evaluation for Language Technologies is increasingly
recognised. This involves assessment of the state-of-the-art for a
given technology, measuring the progress achieved within a pro-
gramme, comparing different approaches to a given problem
and choosing the best solution, knowing its advantages and dis-
advantages, assessment of the availability of technologies for a
given application, product benchmarking, and assessment of sys-
tem usability and user satisfaction.

In the recent past, language engineering and research and development
in language technologies have led to important advances in various
aspects of   written, spoken and multimodal language processing.
Although the evaluation paradigm has been studied and used in
large national and international programmes, including the US
DARPA HLT programme, the EU HLT programme under FP5-IST,
the Francophone AUF programme and others, particularly in the
localisation industry (LISA and LRC), it is still subject to
substantial unsolved basic research problems. The European 6th
Framework program (FP6), planned for a start in 2003, includes
multilingual and multisensorial communication as one of the
major R&D issue, and the evaluation of technologies appears as a
specific item in the Integrated Project instrument presentation.

The aim of this Conference is to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art,
discuss problems and opportunities, exchange information regarding
language resources, their applications, ongoing and planned activities,
industrial use and requirements, discuss evaluation methodologies
and demonstrate evaluation tools, explore possibilities and promote
initiatives for international cooperation in the areas mentioned above.

CONFERENCE TOPICS

PROGRAM

The Scientific Program will include invited talks, presentations of
oral papers, poster sessions, referenced demonstrations and panels.
A special workshop will be organised on National Projects in LR
and evaluation.

FORMAT FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

Submitted abstracts of papers for oral and posters presentations
should consist of about 800 words.

Demonstrations of LR and related tools will be reviewed as well.
Please send an outline of about 400 words. If a demo is connected to
a paper, please attach the outline to the paper  abstract.

A limited number of panels and workshops is foreseen. Proposals
are welcome and will be reviewed. For panels please send a brief
description, including an outline of the intended structure (topic,
organiser, panel moderator , tentative list of panelists). For workshops,
see below.

All submissions should include a separate title page, providing
the following information: type of proposal (paper for oral presentation,
paper for poster presentation, demo, paper plus demo, panel); the title
to be printed in the programme of the Conference; names and
affiliations of the authors or proposers; the full address of the first author
(or a contact person), including phone, fax, email, URL; the required
facilities for presentation (overhead projector, data display; other hardware,
platforms, communications); and 5 keywords.

All submissions will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee that will be
announced within the second call.

Exhibits: An exhibit area will also be made available at
LREC2002.  This is open to companies and projects wishing
to promote, present and demonstrate their language resources
and evaluation products and prototypes to a wide range of experts
and representatives from all over the world who will be participating
at the conference. Please note that the exhibits of LR are different
from system demonstrations. The exhibits will run in parallel with
the Conference for 3 days and the exhibit hall will be located
near the general conference rooms.

LREC98, in Granada, had 197 papers and posters presented,
with about 510 registered participants from 38 different countries
from all  continents. Among these, the largest group came from
Spain (81 participants), followed by France (75), USA (73), Germany (47),
UK (43) and Italy (41). Registered participants belonged to over 325
different organisations.
LREC2000, in Athens, had 129 oral papers and 152 posters presented,
with more than 600 participants from 51 different countries from all
continents. Among these, the largest group came from Greece (117),
followed by USA (70), France (59), Germany (45), UK (43), Japan (35)
and Italy (29). Registered participants belonged to 319 different
organisations.
We anticipate a similar number of participants in LREC2002.
We therefore expect the exhibits at LREC2002 to have a large audience.

WORKSHOPS
Pre-Conference Workshops will be organised on the 27 and
28 of May 2002,and post-Conference Workshops on the 1
and 2 of June 2002. Proposals for workshops should be sent to:

·       A brief technical description of the specific technical issues that
         the workshop will address.
·       The reasons why the workshop is of interest this time.

         from different institutions.
·       The name of  the member of the Workshop Organising Committee
         designated as the contact person.
·       A time schedule of the workshop and a preliminary agenda.
·       A summary of the intended workshop Call for Participation.
·       A list of audio-visual or technical requirements and any special room
         requirements.

The workshop proposers will be responsible for the organisational aspects
(e.g. Workshop Call preparation and distribution, review of papers,

The goal of this workshop is to be a forum and a meeting point for researchers
developing models of semantic / pragmatic processing (computational and
non-computational) motivated by psychological evidence or corpus studies, with
a focus on human language processing.  This year's workshop will

- lexical access and disambiguation
- anaphora resolution
- scope assignment

We would especially like to encourage the exchange of results between
psychological experimentation, computational modelling, and corpus-based

various sub-topics, until this series there has not been a regular place
for such research to be presented in a forum to receive attention from the
larger SIGdial community and researchers outside this community. The
workshop is organised by SIGdial which is a joint ACL and ISCA SIG.

With the explosion in the quantity of on-line text and multimedia
information in recent years, there has been a renewed interest in
automatic summarization. This book provides a systematic introduction to
the field, explaining basic definitions, the strategies used by human
summarizers, and automatic methods that leverage linguistic and

PRESENTATION
------------

Le présent numéro de Recherches sur le français parlé s'inscrit dans les
axes de recherches prioritaires lancés par le Groupe Aixois de Recherche en
Syntaxe (G.A.R.S.), repris par l'actuelle équipe Description Linguistique
informatisée sur Corpus (DELIC). Une préoccupation commune des auteurs est
d'appuyer leurs articles sur l'examen de données authentiques de français
parlé. Cette orientation méthodologique, traditionnelle dans cette revue,
se trouve confortée par l'outil nouveau que constitue le corpus
informatisé. Cet outil, en cours de développement, permet de passer d'une
utilisation qualitative des exemples authentiques à une utilisation
quantitative qui apporte une nouvelle force à la preuve par le corpus. Sur
le plan de la méthodologie de l'analyse, les études présentées cherchent à
tirer partie des outils descriptifs mis au point par le G.A.R.S, notamment
la distinction entre niveau microsyntaxique et niveau macrosyntaxique, en
les appliquant à des domaines empiriques nouveaux (corrélation, apposition,
certains sujet, comme). La méthode distributionnelle classique est utilisée
de façon novatrice dans l'approche de phénomènes de grammaticalisation (à
part), dans l'approfondissement de la limite langue discours, dans
l'analyse de discours d'aphasiques, ainsi que dans une application didactique.

Les langues vivantes sont en perpétuel développement. Particulièrement
attentif à la protection de nombreuses espèces, notre monde semble
toutefois moins sensibilisé à la disparition des langues locales ou à
leur faible aptitude à survivre face à la modernité. Les efforts de
l'ingénierie linguistique sont avant tout dirigés vers les marchés
porteurs et leurs locuteurs. Hier, le linguiste pouvait demeurer au
balcon et prôner une approche strictement descriptive. Cette approche
demeure-t-elle nécessairement adéquate aujourd'hui ? Inspirée par un
grand respect du fait de langue comme manifestation de l'identité
culturelle, ne conduit-elle pas, en définitive, à s'ajuster bon gré mal
gré à l'idéologie dominante de totale liberté des marchés ?

Pour ce premier numéro des Cahiers du Rifal, le Réseau international
francophone d'aménagement linguistique entend largement ouvrir le débat
à des contributions qui feraient le point sur la question du
développement des langues face à l'avènement des technologies et de la
mondialisation de l'économie. Des contributions sont notamment attendues
sur les points suivants :

- Interaction entre les développements linguistiques et technologiques ;
- Langues d'expansion, langues véhiculaires et respect de l'identité
culturelle ;
- L'ingénierie linguistique au service des langues de faible expansion ;
- L'ingénierie linguistique face aux exigences du développement humain ;
- La pénétration des autoroutes de l'information sur les marchés
linguistiques locaux ;
- L'appropriation (géo)politique de la question des langues locales.

Les directeurs scientifiques souhaitent rassembler dans ce premier
numéro une diversité de points de vue sur cette vaste thématique. Ils
attendent des articles venus de tous les horizons géographiques et
culturels, portant sur des réflexions théoriques autant que sur des
expériences de terrain.
Les contributions devront être rédigées - ou traduites - en français et
suivre les conventions de présentation des Cahiers du Rifal

The Thirteenth Amsterdam Colloquium will be held from December 17-19, 2001
at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. The Amsterdam Colloquia aim at bringing
together linguists, logicians, philosophers and computer scientists who
share an interest in the formal study of semantics of natural and formal
languages. The spectrum of topics covered ranges from descriptive (semantic
analyses of all kinds of expressions) to theoretical (logical and
computational properties of semantic theories, philosophical foundations).


The program of the Thirteenth Amsterdam Colloquium consists of:

*  General Program, which includes  invited lectures by:
  Reinhard Blutner (Berlin) - Gennaro Chierchia (Milan)- Ruth Kempson

  Angelika   Kratzer (Amherst)

*  Workshop on Semantics and Cognition, with invited lectures by:

  Pieter  Muyskens (Nijmegen) - Luc Steels (Antwerp)

*  Workshop on Games in Language and Logic, which includes an invited
lecture by:
  Rohit Parikh (CUNY) - Robert Stalnaker (MIT) - Robert Sugden (East Anglia)

*  A special evening session, organized by the Evert W. Beth Foundation,
which features the  Beth Lecture  given by:
  Hans Kamp (Stuttgart)

In the General Program there is room for presentations of approx. 30
contributed papers in parallel sessions. These papers can be on any topic
within the
scope of the Colloquium. Time allotted for presentation is 30 minutes,
including discussion.


Submission of abstracts

Your submission should consist of:

1.  An  anonymous  abstract of  two pages (1000 words max). The abstract
must include a short 10 line summary, which clearly indicates subject
matter and conclusions of your contribution.

2  A  separate page  on which are specified: your name, affiliation, postal
address, e-mail address and the title of your contribution. (It should
contain the same data for co-authors, if any.)

Submission by e-mail is encouraged, provided that the abstract and summary,
and the personal details page are sent as separate attachments in either
postscript, pdf or Word format. Submissions in other file formats  can not
be accepted.
The  deadline for submission of abstracts is September 1, 2001. Authors
will be notified of acceptance by October 15. Extended 6 page abstracts, to
be included in the proceedings, are due on November 15. The proceedings
will be distributed at the conference.
Multiple submissions are admitted, but no single author is allowed to give
more than one presentation. In case authors are involved in more than one
submission, one or more of which are co-authored, it should be indicated
clearly which author is actually going to give the presentation. Program

Comme lors des premières journées, nous avons choisi un objet central
susceptible d'intéresser simultanément plusieurs champs de recherche, afin
de permettre des échanges entre spécialistes de différents domaines.

Le sujet proposé (les universaux), qui a donné lieu déjà à des colloques et
journées de reflexion récemment en France, concernera ici les objets
sonores (segments, syllabes, prosodie etc) et  s'articulera autour des
questions suivantes.
Comment peut-on penser actuellement les rapports entre forme et substance,
cette dichotomie est-elle pertinente aujourd'hui ?
Avons-nous besoin d'avoir recours à la notion d'universaux, et dans
l'affirmative, comment la définir, pour construire une grammaire
cognitivement plausible ?
Comment s'articule la question des universaux sonores sur le problème plus
général de l'existence d'universaux cognitifs . En d'autres termes, si nous
avons recours à une telle notion, avec quel degré de spécificité avons-nous
à concevoir les universaux ?

Readers of this list may be interested in knowing that there is an open call
for scientific fellowships at the European Commission's Joint Research
Centre in Ispra near the Lago Maggiore in Northern Italy. You will find

For fellowships to work specifically on Language Technology (LT)
applications, please have a look at the Research Fellowships at ISIS
(Institute for Systems, Informatics and Safety;

work program sections most concerned with Language Technology applications
are I.3.a and I.3.b (Serving the Citizen - Benefiting from the Information
Society). For a brief description of our LT work, see below.

The team working on LT applications is rather small so that we only
anticipate a very limited number of grant assignments in this field.
Commencing date is likely to be Spring 2002, but the application has to be
handed in by 15 September.

Applications for post-doc grants (Ph.D. or equivalent work experience;
3300 - 5000 Euro/month) with a duration of between 6 and 24 months are
preferred over applications for post-graduate grants (duration of 6 to 36
months; 2300 - 3500 Euro/month).

Current LT activities at the EC's Joint Research Centre

We are a small, multi-disciplinary and international team of scientists and
developers working on a range of applications with focus on giving
cross-language information access to multilingual textual data. Applications
of interest are

- multilingual retrieval of potentially relevant documents using intelligent
agent technology
- document analysis, incl. the recognition of the document language, the
recognition of named entities, the identification of open class and
closed-class keywords, text classification and document similarity
calculation
- visualisation of the contents of single documents (document profiles) and
of whole document collections (document maps)

As we are aiming at eventually covering all eleven official EU languages, we
concentrate on mainly using statistical methods which can be ported from one
language to the other without an enormous amount of manual effort. For

				SEMPRO-2001:
            COGNITIVELY PLAUSIBLE MODELS OF SEMANTIC PROCESSING

	   (A workshop in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the
		     Cognitive Science Society)

The goal of this workshop is to be a forum and a meeting point for researchers
developing models of semantic / pragmatic processing (computational and
non-computational) motivated by psychological evidence or corpus studies, with
a focus on human language processing.  This year's workshop will
feature papers on:

- incrementality and underspecification in semantic processing
- lexical access and disambiguation
- anaphora resolution
- scope assignment

We would especially like to encourage the exchange of results between
psychological experimentation, computational modelling, and
corpus-based work.

Cette journee, organisee par l'Association Francaise de Linguistique
Appliquee en association avec les Departements LEA et LLCE de
l'Universite de Bretagne Sud, le Centre de Recherche en Litteratures,

et Pratiques Langagieres (ALPL), se veut un lieu de rencontre entre
tous ceux qui s'interessent a la linguistique de corpus du point de
vue des applications de la linguistique : chercheurs en linguistique,

d'offrir un forum d'echange d'experiences a ceux qui travaillent sur
des corpus textuels plutot que sur le developpement d'outils
informatiques. La journee prendra la forme d'exposes sur des travaux
en cours, sous forme de posters affiches ou d'interventions orales, et
s'achevera par une table ronde sur les perspectives de developpement
de cette discipline en France.

La journee s'adresse principalement aux chercheurs et enseignants

The Third International Conference on Language
Resources and Evaluation is organised by ELRA
in cooperation with other Associations and Consortia,
including ACL, AFNLPA, ALLC, CLASS, COCOSDA,
ORIENTAL COCOSDA, EAFT, EAGLES/ISLE,
ELSNET, ENABLER, EURALEX, FRANCIL, ISCA,
LDC, ONTOWEB, PAROLE, etc., and with major
national and international organisations, including
the Commission of the EU  Information Society DG,
DARPA, NSF, and the Japanese Project for International
Co-ordination of East-Asian Spoken Language Resources
and Evaluation. Co-operation with other organisations is
currently being sought.

CONFERENCE AIMS

In the framework of the Information Society, the pervasive
character of Human Language Technologies (HLT) and
their relevance to practically all the fields of Information
Society Technologies (IST) has been widely recognised.

Two issues are considered particularly relevant: the
availability of language resources and the methods for
the evaluation of resources, technologies, products and
applications. Substantial mutual benefits can be expected
from addressing these issues through international cooperation.

The term language resources (LR) refers to sets of language
data and descriptions in machine readable form, used  e.g.
for: building and evaluating natural language, speech and
multimodal algorithms or systems, software localisation
industries and language services, language enabled
information and communication services, natural interactivity,
knowledge management, electronic commerce, electronic
publishing, language studies, subject-area specialists and end
users.

Examples of linguistic resources are written, spoken and
multimodal corpora and lexica, grammars, terminology databases,
multimedia databases, basic software tools for the acquisition,
preparation, collection, management, customisation and use of
these and other resources.

The relevance of evaluation for Language Technologies is increasingly
recognised. This involves assessment of the state-of-the-art for a
given technology, measuring the progress achieved within a pro-
gramme, comparing different approaches to a given problem
and choosing the best solution, knowing its advantages and dis-
advantages, assessment of the availability of technologies for a
given application, product benchmarking, and assessment of sys-
tem usability and user satisfaction.

In the recent past, language engineering and research and development
in language technologies have led to important advances in various
aspects of   written, spoken and multimodal language processing.
Although the evaluation paradigm has been studied and used in
large national and international programmes, including the US
DARPA HLT programme, the EU HLT programme under FP5-IST,
the Francophone AUF programme and others, particularly in the
localisation industry (LISA and LRC), it is still subject to
substantial unsolved basic research problems. The European 6th
Framework program (FP6), planned for a start in 2003, includes
multilingual and multisensorial communication as one of the
major R&D issue, and the evaluation of technologies appears as a
specific item in the Integrated Project instrument presentation.

The aim of this Conference is to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art,
discuss problems and opportunities, exchange information regarding
language resources, their applications, ongoing and planned activities,
industrial use and requirements, discuss evaluation methodologies
and demonstrate evaluation tools, explore possibilities and promote
initiatives for international cooperation in the areas mentioned above.

PROGRAM

The Scientific Program will include invited talks, presentations of
oral papers, poster sessions, referenced demonstrations and panels.
A special workshop will be organised on National Projects in LR
and evaluation.

FORMAT FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

Submitted abstracts of papers for oral and posters presentations
should consist of about 800 words.

Demonstrations of LR and related tools will be reviewed as well.
Please send an outline of about 400 words. If a demo is connected to
a paper, please attach the outline to the paper  abstract.

A limited number of panels and workshops is foreseen. Proposals
are welcome and will be reviewed. For panels please send a brief
description, including an outline of the intended structure (topic,
organiser, panel moderator , tentative list of panelists). For workshops,
see below.

All submissions should include a separate title page, providing
the following information: type of proposal (paper for oral presentation,
paper for poster presentation, demo, paper plus demo, panel); the title
to be printed in the programme of the Conference; names and
affiliations of the authors or proposers; the full address of the first author
(or a contact person), including phone, fax, email, URL; the required
facilities for presentation (overhead projector, data display; other hardware,
platforms, communications); and 5 keywords.

All submissions will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee that will be
announced within the second call.

Exhibits: An exhibit area will also be made available at
LREC2002.  This is open to companies and projects wishing
to promote, present and demonstrate their language resources
and evaluation products and prototypes to a wide range of experts
and representatives from all over the world who will be participating
at the conference. Please note that the exhibits of LR are different
from system demonstrations. The exhibits will run in parallel with
the Conference for 3 days and the exhibit hall will be located
near the general conference rooms.

LREC98, in Granada, had 197 papers and posters presented,
with about 510 registered participants from 38 different countries
from all  continents. Among these, the largest group came from
Spain (81 participants), followed by France (75), USA (73), Germany (47),
UK (43) and Italy (41). Registered participants belonged to over 325
different organisations.
LREC2000, in Athens, had 129 oral papers and 152 posters presented,
with more than 600 participants from 51 different countries from all
continents. Among these, the largest group came from Greece (117),
followed by USA (70), France (59), Germany (45), UK (43), Japan (35)
and Italy (29). Registered participants belonged to 319 different
organisations.
We anticipate a similar number of participants in LREC2002.
We therefore expect the exhibits at LREC2002 to have a large audience.

The ninth meeting of the TMI conference will be held March 13-17, 2002
near the historic cities of Nara and Kyoto in Japan.

The workshops and tutorials will be held jointly with the Natural
Language Processing Society, Japan.

Submission Guidelines:

Authors are invited to submit substantial, original, and unpublished
research on any issues relevant to machine translation. Papers should
be in English, not longer than 10 pages (around 5,000 words),
including references. Topics of interest include, but are not limited
to:

    MT for the Web
    Practical MT (multilingual eCommerce, localization, etc.)
    Methodologies for MT (statistical, example-based, KBMT, ...)
    Speech and dialogue translation
    NLP techniques for MT
    Knowledge acquisition for MT systems
    MT evaluation techniques and evaluation results
    MT for cross-lingual retrieval and question answering

Your paper should be prepared according to the following guidelines
(for authors using LaTeX, there is a style file tmi02.cls available,
which comes with a pair of style files for formatting examples,
gb4e.sty and cgloss4e.sty.

-The font size should be no smaller than 11pt, and the paper size
 should be A4.

-TMI uses an anonymous review process. Therefore, all
 papers should be submitted with a separate author ID page (in a
 separate file) that includes only the title of the paper, the topic
 area, and the author name(s) and address(es). The paper itself should
 begin with the title and an abstract, but should not include the names
 or addresses of the authors.

-Papers should be submitted as .pdf files only. All papers will be
 submitted electronically; authors must first register before uploading
 papers to the program committee database (details coming soon on the
 Author Resource page).  For bibliographic references, if the author's
 name(s) is/are part of the text, then only the date should be in
 brackets. E.g. "Huddleston (1988) introduced the term ...", not
 "(Huddleston 1988) introduced the term ..."

-Make sure your figures are not wider than the text.  Don't forget to
 use italics for cited words, and double quotes for glosses. If you
 cite non-Roman script please cite as follows: NON-EUROPEAN
 transliteration "gloss" (the transliteration should be in italics).

The goal of this workshop is to be a forum and a meeting point for researchers
developing models of semantic / pragmatic processing (computational and
non-computational) motivated by psychological evidence or corpus studies, with
a focus on human language processing.  This year's workshop will
feature papers on:

- incrementality and underspecification in semantic processing
- lexical access and disambiguation
- anaphora resolution
- scope assignment

We would especially like to encourage the exchange of results between
psychological experimentation, computational modelling, and corpus-based
work.

Description

Following up on the successful 1st Workshop in Hong Kong in October 2000,
this will be the next in a series of workshops spanning the ACL and ISCA
SIGdial interest area of discourse and dialogue. While there has been a
lot of activity in this area, and fairly frequent "specialty" workshops on
various sub-topics, until this series there has not been a regular place
for such research to be presented in a forum to receive attention from the
larger SIGdial community and researchers outside this community. The
workshop is organised by SIGdial which is a joint ACL and ISCA SIG.
The workshop is sponsored by ACL, ELSNET, EAGLES/ISLE and ISCA.

information in recent years, there has been a renewed interest in
automatic summarization. This book provides a systematic introduction to
the field, explaining basic definitions, the strategies used by human
summarizers, and automatic methods that leverage linguistic and

PRESENTATION
------------

Le pr?sent num?ro de Recherches sur le fran?ais parl? s'inscrit dans les
axes de recherches prioritaires lanc?s par le Groupe Aixois de Recherche en
Syntaxe (G.A.R.S.), repris par l'actuelle ?quipe Description Linguistique
informatis?e sur Corpus (DELIC). Une pr?occupation commune des auteurs est
d'appuyer leurs articles sur l'examen de donn?es authentiques de fran?ais
parl?. Cette orientation m?thodologique, traditionnelle dans cette revue,
se trouve confort?e par l'outil nouveau que constitue le corpus
informatis?. Cet outil, en cours de d?veloppement, permet de passer d'une
utilisation qualitative des exemples authentiques ? une utilisation
quantitative qui apporte une nouvelle force ? la preuve par le corpus. Sur
le plan de la m?thodologie de l'analyse, les ?tudes pr?sent?es cherchent ?
tirer partie des outils descriptifs mis au point par le G.A.R.S, notamment
la distinction entre niveau microsyntaxique et niveau macrosyntaxique, en
les appliquant ? des domaines empiriques nouveaux (corr?lation, apposition,
certains sujet, comme). La m?thode distributionnelle classique est utilis?e
de fa?on novatrice dans l'approche de ph?nom?nes de grammaticalisation (?
part), dans l'approfondissement de la limite langue discours, dans
l'analyse de discours d'aphasiques, ainsi que dans une application didactique.

traducteurs et interpr?tes, Bruxelles).

Les langues vivantes sont en perp?tuel d?veloppement. Particuli?rement
attentif ? la protection de nombreuses esp?ces, notre monde semble
toutefois moins sensibilis? ? la disparition des langues locales ou ?
leur faible aptitude ? survivre face ? la modernit?. Les efforts de
l'ing?nierie linguistique sont avant tout dirig?s vers les march?s
porteurs et leurs locuteurs. Hier, le linguiste pouvait demeurer au
balcon et pr?ner une approche strictement descriptive. Cette approche
demeure-t-elle n?cessairement ad?quate aujourd'hui ? Inspir?e par un
grand respect du fait de langue comme manifestation de l'identit?
culturelle, ne conduit-elle pas, en d?finitive, ? s'ajuster bon gr? mal
gr? ? l'id?ologie dominante de totale libert? des march?s ?

Pour ce premier num?ro des Cahiers du Rifal, le R?seau international
francophone d'am?nagement linguistique entend largement ouvrir le d?bat
? des contributions qui feraient le point sur la question du
d?veloppement des langues face ? l'av?nement des technologies et de la
mondialisation de l'?conomie. Des contributions sont notamment attendues
sur les points suivants :

- Interaction entre les d?veloppements linguistiques et technologiques ;
- Langues d'expansion, langues v?hiculaires et respect de l'identit?
culturelle ;
- L'ing?nierie linguistique au service des langues de faible expansion ;
- L'ing?nierie linguistique face aux exigences du d?veloppement humain ;
- La p?n?tration des autoroutes de l'information sur les march?s
linguistiques locaux ;
- L'appropriation (g?o)politique de la question des langues locales.

Les directeurs scientifiques souhaitent rassembler dans ce premier
num?ro une diversit? de points de vue sur cette vaste th?matique. Ils
attendent des articles venus de tous les horizons g?ographiques et
culturels, portant sur des r?flexions th?oriques autant que sur des
exp?riences de terrain.

        AC2001 - The Thirteenth Amsterdam Colloquium - December 17-19, 2001

                         Second Call for Papers


The Thirteenth Amsterdam Colloquium will be held from December 17-19, 2001
at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. The Amsterdam Colloquia aim at bringing
together linguists, logicians, philosophers and computer scientists who
share an interest in the formal study of semantics of natural and formal
languages. The spectrum of topics covered ranges from descriptive (semantic
analyses of all kinds of expressions) to theoretical (logical and
computational properties of semantic theories, philosophical foundations).


The program of the Thirteenth Amsterdam Colloquium consists of:

*  General Program, which includes  invited lectures by:
  Reinhard Blutner (Berlin) - Gennaro Chierchia (Milan)- Ruth Kempson
(London) -
  Angelika   Kratzer (Amherst)

*  Workshop on Semantics and Cognition, with invited lectures by:
  Ted Briscoe (Cambridge) - Simon Garrod (Glasgow)- Jonathan Ginzburg
(London)-
  Pieter  Muyskens (Nijmegen) - Luc Steels (Antwerp)

*  Workshop on Games in Language and Logic, which includes an invited
lecture by:
  Rohit Parikh (CUNY) - Robert Stalnaker (MIT) - Robert Sugden (East Anglia)

*  A special evening session, organized by the Evert W. Beth Foundation,
which features the  Beth Lecture  given by:
  Hans Kamp (Stuttgart)

In the General Program there is room for presentations of approx. 30
contributed papers in parallel sessions. These papers can be on any topic
within the
scope of the Colloquium. Time allotted for presentation is 30 minutes,
including discussion.


Submission of abstracts

Your submission should consist of:

1.  An  anonymous  abstract of  two pages (1000 words max). The abstract
must include a short 10 line summary, which clearly indicates subject
matter and conclusions of your contribution.

2  A  separate page  on which are specified: your name, affiliation, postal
address, e-mail address and the title of your contribution. (It should
contain the same data for co-authors, if any.)

Submission by e-mail is encouraged, provided that the abstract and summary,
and the personal details page are sent as separate attachments in either
postscript, pdf or Word format. Submissions in other file formats  can not
be accepted.
The  deadline for submission of abstracts is September 1, 2001. Authors
will be notified of acceptance by October 15. Extended 6 page abstracts, to
be included in the proceedings, are due on November 15. The proceedings
will be distributed at the conference.
Multiple submissions are admitted, but no single author is allowed to give
more than one presentation. In case authors are involved in more than one
submission, one or more of which are co-authored, it should be indicated
clearly which author is actually going to give the presentation. Program

Le sujet propos? (les universaux), qui a donn? lieu d?j? ? des colloques et
journ?es de reflexion r?cemment en France, concernera ici les objets
sonores (segments, syllabes, prosodie etc) et  s'articulera autour des
questions suivantes.
Comment peut-on penser actuellement les rapports entre forme et substance,
cette dichotomie est-elle pertinente aujourd'hui ?
Avons-nous besoin d'avoir recours ? la notion d'universaux, et dans
l'affirmative, comment la d?finir, pour construire une grammaire
cognitivement plausible ?
Comment s'articule la question des universaux sonores sur le probl?me plus

An MSc student at Leeds University, Zhou Kai Xiong, is working on a
Project to set up a A Web-site for Computer Supported Collaboration in
Chinese and English Computational Linguistics. See

Do you think these are useful? Any comments are welcome.

I have not find any websites that provide Chinese-English web page
translation; if you know of one. please tell me!

Readers of this list may be interested in knowing that there is an open call
for scientific fellowships at the European Commission's Joint Research
Centre in Ispra near the Lago Maggiore in Northern Italy. You will find
information on this subject at the site http://www.jrc.it .

For fellowships to work specifically on Language Technology (LT)
applications, please have a look at the Research Fellowships at ISIS
(Institute for Systems, Informatics and Safety;
http://webfarm.jrc.cec.eu.int/isis/opportunities/fellowships.asp). The JRC
work program sections most concerned with Language Technology applications
are I.3.a and I.3.b (Serving the Citizen - Benefiting from the Information
Society). For a brief description of our LT work, see below.

The team working on LT applications is rather small so that we only
anticipate a very limited number of grant assignments in this field.
Commencing date is likely to be Spring 2002, but the application has to be
handed in by 15 September.

Applications for post-doc grants (Ph.D. or equivalent work experience;
3300 - 5000 Euro/month) with a duration of between 6 and 24 months are
preferred over applications for post-graduate grants (duration of 6 to 36
months; 2300 - 3500 Euro/month).

Current LT activities at the EC's Joint Research Centre

We are a small, multi-disciplinary and international team of scientists and
developers working on a range of applications with focus on giving
cross-language information access to multilingual textual data. Applications
of interest are

- multilingual retrieval of potentially relevant documents using intelligent
agent technology
- document analysis, incl. the recognition of the document language, the
recognition of named entities, the identification of open class and
closed-class keywords, text classification and document similarity
calculation
- visualisation of the contents of single documents (document profiles) and
of whole document collections (document maps)

As we are aiming at eventually covering all eleven official EU languages, we
concentrate on mainly using statistical methods which can be ported from one
language to the other without an enormous amount of manual effort. For

				SEMPRO-2001:
            COGNITIVELY PLAUSIBLE MODELS OF SEMANTIC PROCESSING

	   (A workshop in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the
		     Cognitive Science Society)

The goal of this workshop is to be a forum and a meeting point for researchers
developing models of semantic / pragmatic processing (computational and
non-computational) motivated by psychological evidence or corpus studies, with
a focus on human language processing.  This year's workshop will
feature papers on:

- incrementality and underspecification in semantic processing
- lexical access and disambiguation
- anaphora resolution
- scope assignment

We would especially like to encourage the exchange of results between
psychological experimentation, computational modelling, and
corpus-based work.

the workshop will include both presentations and a poster session. A
