Gentlemen,

With SchlumbergerSema, Lingway won a 3-year contract from Eurostat for
implementing a natural-language access to European Nomenclatures in
the various languages of the EU. The first phase of this project
includes an inventory and qualification of available resources and
parsers for the targeted languages.

We would like to finalize our first evaluation for mid-March.

The selected tools will then be integrated in an application managed
at the EU level.

Our inventory is nearly done for English, Spanish, German and French,
but we would like to drill down the availability for resources in the
other languages.

If you know about a technology (whether resources or parsers), at an
industrial or near-industrial state, can you provide us with detailed
information? We will synthesize the answers back to the list.

1          But de l'association
 L'Association a pour objet de favoriser les actions d'evaluation des
logiciels issus des industries de la langue, et notamment de :

·    promouvoir l'evaluation comme une discipline a part entiere ;

·    participer a la mise en place de standards et normes dans le
     domaine des industries de la langue au sens large et en particulier dans le
     domaine de la linguistique informatique ;

·   favoriser la formation et l'information des ingenieurs et
    scientifiques amenes a mettre en place ou participer a des actions d'
    evaluation dans le domaine des industries de la langue.



Promotion de l'evaluation :

L'Association participe a la promotion de l'evaluation comme une discipline
a part entiere des activites de recherche et developpement dans le domaine
des industries de la langue, par tous les moyens possibles et de façon non
exhaustive par :

·    La participation a des projets institutionnels,

·    L'organisation d'actions concertees avec les chercheurs et
     entreprises du domaine,

·    L'organisation de manifestations scientifiques,

·    La promotion de publications sur l'evaluation et/ou sur des
      disciplines connexes,

·    le maintien de liens etroits avec la recherche et notamment avec
     les autres associations oeuvrant dans le domaine de la linguistique et/ou
     des industries de la langue, aussi bien au niveau national qu'a l'
     international.

 Participation a la mise en place de standards et normes :

L'Association participe a la definition et a la mise en application de
standards et normes dans le domaine de l'evaluation par tous les moyens
possibles (participation a des projets institutionnels, actions concertees
avec les chercheurs et entreprises du domaine, organisation de
manifestations scientifiques, publications etc.).

Formation et information :

L'Association favorise la mise en place de formations specialisees dans le
domaine, sous forme de workshops ou conferences. Elle developpe et maintient
les relations avec les associations et les representants de l'enseignement
et de la recherche.

Elle aide a la mise a jour des connaissances des membres, notamment par la
diffusion d'informations sur l'evaluation (procedures, etat de l'art,
recherche, etc.).

Scope and Background:

COMPUTERM'02: Second Workshop on Computational Terminology invites
a wide range of papers on substantial, original and unpublished
research on all aspects of computational terminology related areas,
including, but not limited to:

terminological thesaurus, establishing semantic relations, conceptual
organisation, etc.
 - bilingual/multilingual terminology alignment/management and
translation extraction
 - terminology extraction
 - terminology resource management Linguistic aspects of terminology
with computational consideration
 - terms and compounding
 - terms and collocations
 - various linguistic aspects of term variations and use

 Applications
 - domain-dependent IE/NE tasks with reference to terms and
terminology, such as the treatment of Biology or Medical
concept/nomenclature.
 - IR/indexing with domain-dependent lexical perspectives
 - encoding terminology-related information and resources
 - document structuring through terminological information, e.g.
making hypertext through terminological links, etc.
Purely linguistic topics with no relation to computational aspects
and purely application topics without any relation to terms and
terminology as linguistic entity (e.g. n-gram based IR) are out of the
scope of the workshop.

COMPUTERM'02 is the second COLING workshop devoted to computational
terminology. The first, very successful, workshop was held at the
occasion of COLING/ACL'98 at Montreal, Canada in 1998. Selected
papers in the first COMPUTERM'98 workshop were published in Recent
Advances in Computational Terminology (John Benjamins).

Submission should follow the guidelines of COLING 2002 main
conference

- We do not have submission registration form, so papers should be

				Présentation

Les bases lexicales multilingues sont des serveurs de données lexicales
structurées. Ces données peuvent être utilisées soit par des humains
pour définir leur propre dictionnaire soit par des applications de
traitement des langues.

Ces dernieres années, nous assistons à une accumulation de ressources
lexicales dans les laboratoires de traitement automatique de la langue
ainsi que sur Internet. les bases lexicales multilingues tentent de
résoudre ce problème d'accumulation en organisant la manipulation et
l'accès à ces ressources. Ces bases sont un point central de la
recherche dans les sciences du langage et dans le développement des
technologies de la langue. Comme les bases de données génomiques, les
bases lexicales sont complexes, évoluent, constituent des serveur
richement annotés et posent de difficiles problèmes scientifiques dans
de nombreux domaines.

Les buts de cet atelier sont de rendre compte de la recherche existante
dans les bases de données multilingues et d'identifier les problèmes
clés. Plus généralement, l'atelier aidera à definir des questions de
recherche de la nouvelle "communauté des bases lexicales multilingues"
autour de Papillon et initiera les échanges sur les problèmes en cours
et les résultats entre cette communauté et les autres communautés
(lexicographie, traduction, interfaces hommes-machine, bases de données
au sens large, etc.).

Papillon est un projet de construction et d'usage collaboratifs sur la
toile d'une base lexicale multilingue et de dictionnaires dérivés en
source ouverte (français, anglais, japonais, lao, thai et vietnamien)
L'atelier est destiné à des participants de plusieurs specialités
incluant les bases de données, la linguistique, la
linguistique-informatique, les annotations et XML.

				Overview

Multilingual lexical databases are repositories of structured
information to provide an easy access to all available meanings of words
and to allow the creation of a number of computer programs that will
help to analyze texts using these datatabases.

Multilingual lexical databases are repositories of structured lexical
data. This data can be used either by humans to derive their own
dictionary, either by NLP applications.

Over the last decade, we assist to an accumulation of lexical resources
in NLP laboratories and on the Internet. The lexical databases try to
solve this accumulation problem by organizing the manipulation and the
access to these resources. These databases are a central point of
research in the language sciences, and in the development of new human
language technologies. Like genomic databases, lexical databases are
complex, evolving and richly annotated repositories, and pose
interesting challenges for efficient representation, indexing and query.

The goals of the workshop are to take stock of existing research in
multilingual lexical databases and to identify the key problems. More
broadly, the workshop will help define the research questions of the new
Papillon "multilingual lexical database community" and initiate the
interchange of relevant ongoing problems and results between this
community and other communities (lexicography, translation,
human-computer interactions, database community at large).

Papillon is a project of construction and collaborative usage on the web
of a multilingual lexical database and electronic dictionaries derived
in open source (French, English, Japanese, Thai, Lao, vietnamese) The
workshop is expected to attract participants from a range of specialties
including databases, linguistics, computational linguistics, annotation
and markup.

The workshop will address a selection of the following topics:

Structures

*  Microstructures of the Entries and Lexical Representation
*  General Architecture and Macrostructure of the Dictionary
*  Models for lexical databases including speech, multimodal
data, and metadata.

Lexical Data

*  Metadata standards serving as finding aids for lexical database,
*  Systematic methods for populating lexical databases,
*  Dictionary recuperation Issues,
*  Monolingual data and bilingual data extraction,
*  Dictionary Internal Translation Issues.

Databases

*  Database support (e.g. what standard database technology has proven
worthwhile for lexical databases?)
*  Query of multilayer annotations
*  Extensions of XML query languages
*  Analysis of existing ad hoc query languages
*  Appropriate indexing methods for linguistic strings and
structures archiving.

Abstract

The notion of constraints is broadly used both in formal linguistics (the
constraint-based theories) and in natural language processing (typically
constraint grammars techniques). However, classical approaches don't
really take advantage of the formal and computational properties of this
notion.

I present in this talk a formalism, called Property Grammars, that
represents all linguistic information by means of constraints. I will
show in what sense constraints can constitute an efficient approach for
natural language processing, that offers solutions to difficult problems
such as partial information or interaction between different domains of
linguistic analysis (e.g. prosody/syntax interaction). I illustrate these
aspects with several examples and propose a general solution both in terms
of representation and implementation.

INTRODUCTION

Natural Language Processing (and Computational Linguistics) courses
have been enjoying a large interest in the last few years. More and
more universities are offering both introductory and advanced
classes. Over the years, faculty from different departments have been
developing their classes by introducing and refining new lectures,
software, and projects.  Some of the main challenges in teaching NLP
are:

1. Teaching to a diverse audience, consisting of a mix of students in
   Linguistics, Computer Science, Information Science, and
   Bioinformatics; both undergraduate and graduate; and with a wide
   range of proficiency in linguistics, computer theory, or
   programming.

2. Selecting an appropriate focus for a course, e.g., theory
   vs. applications, symbolic vs. empirical, text-only
   vs. text+speech, etc.

3. Finding an appropriate place of an NLP/CL course within a larger
   curriculum, e.g., in Artificial Intelligence, Computational
   Linguistics, Cognitive Science, or Language Engineering.

4. Finding the right links to related areas, such as Theoretical
   Linguistics, Information Retrieval, Speech Science, Cognitive
   Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Genetic/Molecular Biology.

5. Choosing appropriate assignments to provide the right mix of
   theoretical, programming and data analysis exercises.

6. Designing software for educational purposes and developing
   tutorials on existing software.

This ACL workshop on Effective Tools and Methodologies for Teaching
NLP/CL will address these challenges. The workshop will bring together
college faculty with experience in teaching such courses as well as
future teachers (e.g., current graduate students).


CALL FOR PAPERS

We will be soliciting short papers (4-6 pages) on the following
topics:

1. Effective course lectures

2. Innovative assignments and projects

3. Educational software

4. Web resources

5. Curriculum issues (e.g., developing an effective multi-course CL
   program)

6. Teaching NLP in different departments: Computer Science,
   Linguistics, Information Science, etc.

7. Connecting teaching and research

8. Seminar-style courses

9. Choice of programming languages (and programming requirements in
   general)

10. Teaching NLP in languages other than English

11. Evaluation issues (outcomes assessment, educational measurement,
    etc.)

In addition to these papers, the organizers will be collecting
pointers to educational resources on the Web, including course notes,
assignments, tutorials, software, and demos.

The workshop will feature a panel discussing longer-term activities
such as a mailing list for instructors, an archive of educational
materials, etc.

Submissions should be formatted according to the ACL style guide
(http://www.cs.ualberta.ca/~lindek/acl02/style) and must be in either
PS, PDF, or DOC format. These should be sent electronically to
radev at umich.edu by the deadline shown below. Hard copies will be
accepted only if the authors explicitly make such arrangements the
co-chairs at least one week prior to the official submission date. In
that case, the hard copies will still have to arrive by the submission
date.

We will assemble printed proceedings, however the ultimate goal of
this workshop would be laying the groundwork for further professional
collaboration in teaching NLP/CL, creating an ACL SIG, and building a
clearinghouse for educational materials.

REGISTRATION

Registration fees are $50 for regular participants and $0 (free) for
up to 10 lower income participants (e.g., graduate students and/or
participants from Eastern Europe, Africa, and other disadvantaged
areas of the world).

Candidates for registration fee waivers should indicate their interest
to the program co-chairs by April 22. Authors of accepted papers will
have priority, then authors of rejected papers, then all others.

La conférence s'articulera autour de deux grands thèmes : (i)
l'interprétation du verbe "être" et des constructions le faisant
intervenir, et (ii) le liage existentiel des indéfinis. Ces deux
thèmes renvoient à la notion d'existence et un objectif de la
conférence est d'explorer les connexions possibles entre ces
thèmes. La conférence sera centrée sur la syntaxe et la sémantique
formelle de l'existence, avec une session spéciale sur le traitement
computationel des constructions existentielles.

Nous invitons à soumettre des résumés pour des présentations de 30 minutes
(suivies de 10 minutes de discussion) dans tous les domaines pertinents et
en particulier sur les questions suivantes:
- La sémantique de "être": combien d'interprétations? Y a-t'il des données
inter-linguistiques justifiant plusieurs interprétations pour "être"?
Prédication dans les langues qui ont plus d'un équivalent pour "être" (e.g.
l'espagnol).
- La syntaxe et la sémantique de constructions dans lesquelles "être"
apparaît: "c'est SN", "ceci est SN" et autres constructions prédicatives à
travers les langues; clivages et pseudo-clivages; l'auxiliaire "être" et
sélection de l'auxiliaire.
- Constructions existentielles en "être" et constructions existentielles en
"avoir".
- Existence et négation.
- Sources de liage existentiel pour la variable introduite par les indéfinis
dans la représentation logique. Asymétries syntaxiques par rapport à la
source de liage existentiel (e.g. l'ancrage spatio-temporel d'une phrase
pour les sujets indéfinis versus l'incorporation sémantique pour les objets
indéfinis). Si, comme il l'a été proposé au cours des dernières années, les
indéfinis introduisent une variable fonctionnelle, comment cette variable
est-elle liée?
- Présupposition existentielle et degrés de (in)définitude.
- Traitement informatique (analyse et génération) des constructions
existentielles.

Les langues de la conférence seront le francais et l'anglais.

The conference will be structured around two themes: i) the
interpretation of the verb "be" and of the constructions in which "be"
occurs, and ii) the existential binding of indefinites. Both themes
are related to the notion of existence and one purpose of the
conference is to explore possible connections between these
themes. The conference will center on the formal syntax and semantics
of existence, with a special session on computational treatments of
existence constructions.

Abstracts are invited for 30-minute presentations (plus 10 minutes
discussion) on all subjects relevant to the conference and in
particular on the following topics:

- The semantics of "be": how many interpretations? Is there evidence
across languages that verbs which correspond to "be" have more than
one interpretation? Predication in languages which have more than one
correspondent for "be" (e.g. Spanish).
- The syntax and semantics of constructions in which "be" occurs: the
"there-be" construction (and the definiteness effect), "it is NP",
"that is NP", various copular constructions across languages; clefts
and pseudo-clefts; auxiliary "be" and auxiliary selection.
- "Be"-existentials and "have"-existentials.
- Existence and negation.
- Sources of existential binding for the variable that indefinites
introduce in the logical representation. Syntactic asymmetries with
respect to the source of existential binding (e.g. the spatio-temporal
anchoring of the sentence as binder of indefinite subjects versus
semantic incorporation for indefinite objects). If indefinites
introduce a function variable, as has been argued by some in recent
years, how is this variable bound?
- Existential presupposition and degrees of (in)definiteness.
- Computational treatment (analysis and generation) of existence
constructions.

The languages of the conference are English and French.

Flexibility Principles in Boolean Semantics
The Interpretation of Coordination, Plurality, and Scope in Natural Language
Yoad Winter

Since the early work of Montague, Boolean semantics and its subfield of generalized quantifier
theory have become the model-theoretic foundation for the study of meaning in natural languages.
This book uses this framework to develop a new semantic theory of central linguistic phenomena
involving coordination, plurality, and scope. The proposed theory makes use of the standard Boolean
interpretation of conjunction, a choice-function account of indefinites, and a novel semantics of
plurals that is not based on the distributive/collective distinction. The key to unifying these
mechanisms is a version of Montagovian semantics that is augmented by flexibility principles:
semantic operations that have no counterpart in phonology.

This is the first book to cover these areas in a way that is both linguistically comprehensive and
formally explicit. On one hand, it addresses questions of primarily linguistic concern: the semantic
functions of words like and and or in different languages, the interpretation of indefinites and
their scope, and the semantic typology of noun phrases and predicates. On the other hand, it
addresses formal questions that are motivated by the treatment of these linguistic problems: the use
of Boolean algebras in linguistics, the proper formalization of choice functions within generalized
quantifier theory, and the extension of this theory to the domain of plurality. While primarily
intended for readers with a background in theoretical linguistics, the book will also be of interest
to researchers and advanced students in logic, computational linguistics, philosophy of language,
and artificial intelligence.

Background

The Evaluation Working Group of the ISLE project has organised a
series of workshops on MT evaluation. Each of these workshops has
contained a practical component, where participants have been asked to
carry out exercises involving MT evaluation. These workshops
proved to be very illuminating, and have stimulated ongoing work
in the area, much of it was reported in the latest workshop in the
series, held at the MT Summit meeting in September 2001.

Results from previous workshops can be consulted at
   http://www.issco.unige.ch/projects/isle/ewg.html,
and the proceedings from the MT Summit in Santiago de Compostela can
be requested from the organisers.

The workshop at LREC 2002 will continue the series, and will consist
primarily of hands-on exercises defined to investigate empirically a
small number of metrics proposed for evaluation of MT systems and the
potential relationships between them.

In an effort to develop a more systematic MT evaluation
methodology, recent work in the EAGLES and ISLE projects, funded by
the EU and NSF, has created a framework of characteristics in terms
of which MT evaluations and systems, past and future, can be described
and classified.  The resulting taxonomy can be consulted at:
   http://issco-www.unige.ch/projects/isle/taxonomy2/.

Previous workshops have led to critical analysis of measures drawn
from the literature, and to the creation of new measures.  Of the
latter, several are aimed at eventual automation of the evaluation
task and/or at finding relatively simple and inexpensive measures
which correlate well with more complex measures that are hard
to automate or expensive to implement.

Given this background, the time has come to concentrate on
systematizing the actual evaluation measures themselves.  For any
particular measure, one would like to know how accurate it is, how
expensive and/or difficult to apply, how independent of other measures,
etc.  Very little of this type of information is available to date.

This workshop will focus on these issues.  The organizers will provide
the participants in advance with the materials required to:
  - perform a small evaluation, using one or two measures
  - perform a cross-measure analysis of the resulting scores
  - create a general characterization of the measure's performance.

The participants will then apply these measures to the data made
available, and bring their results to the workshop in order to
integrate them with other participants' results.

The overall intention of the workshop is to discover, empirically,
what kinds of characteristics are easily determinable, and how
accurate they actually are.  Only through a process of assessing the
evaluations can we eventually arrive at a small but accurate set of
measures that adequately cover the set of phenomena MT system
evaluators, system developers, and potential MT users care about.

It is our hope that participants will feel inspired to continue
this process, so that the combined results can be assembled later,
integrated into the framework, and become a valuable resource to
anyone interested in MT evaluation.

THEMES

Derrière l'étiquette de TAL, opèrent différentes lignes de tension,
rendant compte du non-consensus sur ce qu'elle désigne, à la fois
champ institutionnellement reconnu, discipline scientifique, domaine
d'applications voire de productions industrielles, au carrefour de
l'informatique et de la linguistique. Dans ce numéro spécial de la
revue TAL, nous proposons d'explorer les différentes lignes de tension
qui opèrent dans le domaine. Les thèmes pourront être les suivants :

(1) Il semblerait que le terme français correspondant à
``computational linguistics'' soit TAL, mais les deux termes
définissent-ils le même domaine, dans la mesure où, historiquement,
ils ont des inscriptions institutionnelle, géographique et
scientifique distinctes, et où en anglais existe le terme ``Natural
Language Processing'' ? On sait que, dans la tradition française,
différents termes ont jalonné l'histoire du domaine : linguistique
algébrique, linguistique quantitative, linguistique informatique,
linguistique computationnelle et, plus tard, industries de la langue
et ingénierie linguistique. De quoi cette diversité de termes est-elle
le signe ? Quelles sont les propositions fondatrices de chacun ?
Quels sont les liens qui les unissent ? Quels sont leurs apports ?

(2) Les objets traditionnellement considérés comme appartenant au TAL
tels que les formalismes grammaticaux et les algorithmes d'analyse
linguistique, en particulier syntaxique, sont-ils spécifiques du
domaine ? Que dire de ces objets construits dans le cadre du TAL, tels
les ATN, à la fois formalismes et dispositifs d'analyse ? Les
formalismes comme LFG, TAG, HPSG, sont-ils rattachés ou rattachables
au TAL ?

(3) Les systèmes de TAL, fondés sur des méthodes probabilistes, grands
corpus ou mémoires de traduction mettent-ils en ?uvre un modèle
probabiliste du texte, du langage, des langues, ou bien ne sont-ils
que des outils, mais alors quels outils et pour quelles tâches ?

(4) L'évaluation des systèmes de TAL, nécessaire dès qu'on les
considère comme des outils, ou qu'une production industrielle est le
but à atteindre, est devenue un champ d'investigation en tant que
tel. Les nombreux travaux qui s'y rattachent permettent de faire le
point sur les différentes méthodes d'évaluation utilisées, leurs
fondements, leurs options, leurs résultats.

Ce sont ces questions d'ordre épistémologique que nous souhaiterions
aborder dans ce numéro, à partir d'une réflexion sur des systèmes ou
des pratiques du TAL, en cours à l'heure actuelle, ou bien développés
lors de ces cinquante années d'histoire, histoire courte, certes, mais
qui a l'avantage de permettre une certaine réflexivité.

Nous souhaitons que les contributions émanent des acteurs du TAL
réfléchissant sur leur pratique sans exclure pour autant les
contributions d'historiens des sciences.

SCOPE and TOPICS

Under the NLP label, several conceptions can be found, accounting for
non-consensual approaches at work in the domain: at the same time an
institutionally acknowledged trend, a scientific discipline, a field
for applications, even for industrial ones, at the crossroads of
computer science and linguistics.  This special issue of TAL is
devoted to epistemological problems of NLP where non-consensual
conceptions are expected to be explored. The following topics and
issues can be addressed:

(1) It seems that the French word for ``computational linguistics'' is
``traitement automatique des langues'', but it is doubtful that both
terms cover the same discipline as, historically, they have separate
anchorages, either institutional, geographical or scientific. Besides,
in English, a specific term exists: ``Natural Language
Processing''. It is well known that, in French tradition, different
names stood out as landmarks in the history of the area:
``linguistique algébrique'', ``linguistique quantitative'',
``linguistique informatique'', ``linguistique computationnelle'', and
more recently ``industries de la langue'' and ``ingénierie
linguistique''.  What does this diversity mean? Which are the
theoretic statements underlying them? What are the links between them?
What are their respective contributions?

(2) Are objects, traditionally considered as belonging to NLP such as
grammar formalisms and linguistic analysis algorithms, namely parsing,
really specific of the domain? What about projects as ATNs, which were
built within NLP and are both formalisms and analysis device? Do
formalisms such as LFG, TAG, HPSG, belong to NLP? Or can they belong
to it?

(3) Do NLP systems, such as large corpora or translation memories,
which are founded on statistical methods, actually implement
probabilistic models of texts, or are they mere tools? In this case,
which tools are appropriate for which tasks?

(4) NLP evaluation, which is necessary when systems are used as tools
or when industrial production is at stake, is now considered as an
investigation field of its own. The numerous works connected to this
area allow taking stock of the available evaluation methods, their
theoretical grounds, their options and their results.

These are the epistemological questions which we wish to be addressed
in the special issue, based on a reflexion either on current NLP
systems and practices, or on systems that were developed during the
fifty years of NLP history.  Fifty years are rather short for history,
but they allow reflexivity, a requirement when historical studies are
at stake.

Contributions are expected from NLP agents reflecting on their
practice.  Contributions from science historians are also welcome.

Cher(e) collègue,

Maurice Gross nous a quittés le 8 décembre dernier.
Il a marqué le monde de la linguistique pendant plusieurs
décennies et nous sommes nombreux à éprouver le besoin de
nous réunir pour parler de sujets liés à sa vie et à son oeuvre.

Nous avons donc organisé deux journées en hommage à Maurice qui
auront lieu le 3 et 4 Juin au Ministère de la Recherche. Les

Depuis près de cinq ans, la revue In Cognito défend la publication
francophone de travaux originaux et de qualité en sciences
cognitives.

Forte de son succès, In Cognito a décidé de donner une audience

Call for Papers

The sixth EAMT Workshop will take place on 14-15 November 2002
hosted by the Centre for Computational Linguistics, UMIST,
Manchester, England.

Organised by the European Association for Machine Translation,
in association with the Natural Language Translation Specialist
Group of the British Computer Society, the Workshop will focus
on the topic of:

                    Teaching Machine Translation

The following topics are of interest:

   why and to whom should MT be taught?
   teaching the theoretical background of MT: linguistics,
      computer science, translation theory
   addressing preconceptions about MT in the classroom
   the use of commercial MT programs in hands-on teaching
   teaching computational aspects of MT to non-computational students
   web-based distance learning of MT
   MT education and industry: bridging the gap between academia
      and the real world
   teaching pre- and post-editing skills to MT users
   teaching MT evaluation
   building modules or `toy' MT systems in the laboratory
   experiences of the evaluation of MT instruction
   the role of MT in language learning
   translation studies and MT
   etc.

We invite submissions of an extended abstract of your proposed paper,
up to two pages, summarizing the main points that will be made in the
actual paper.

Submissions will be reviewed by members of the Programme Committee.
Authors of accepted papers will be asked to submit a full version
of the paper, maximum 12 pages, which will be included in the
proceedings.

A stylefile for accepted submissions will be available in due course.

Initially, an extended abstract should be sent, preferably by email

Authors are invited to submit original, previously unpublished work and
should provide sufficient details to allow the Program Committee to
evaluate its validity, quality, and relevance to the conference.

Submissions will be reviewed by at least 2 specialists in the domain.
Decisions will be based on the following criteria:
   o Importance and originality of the paper
   o Accuracy of the scientific and technical content
   o Comparison of the results obtained with other relevant work
   o Layout and clarity of the paper

We encourage the submission of software demos. Developers wishing to

Overview

Grammars are central components of many types of NLP system. The
workshop will be concerned with methods for the effective
engineering and evaluation of grammars with particular emphasis
on their use in real-world applications.

Background

Recent years have seen the development of techniques and
resources to support robust, deep grammatical analysis of
language in real-world domains, for instance in flexible
human-computer dialog systems (e.g.  the Dutch OVIS prototype
train information system) and speech-to-speech translation
(e.g. the Verbmobil system). The demands of these types of tasks
have driven significant advances in areas such as parser
efficiency, hybrid statistical / symbolic approaches to
disambiguation, and the acquisition of large-scale lexicons. In
response to these successes deep language processing is starting
to be deployed in commercial applications such as automated email
response.

The effective development, maintenance and enhancement of
grammars is a central issue in such efforts, and the size and
complexity of realistic grammars forces these processes to be
tackled in ways that have much in common with software
engineering. Thus, two common metrics defined over grammars are
coverage and degree of overgeneration; these can be evaluated by
applying the grammar to manually-constructed test suites of
grammatical and ungrammatical inputs, ideally supported by
automated profiling and visualisation tools. Examples of test
suites include those that have been produced on the TSNLP, DiET
and Verbmobil projects, while the Saarbruecken [incr tsdb()]
system is one of the established profiling tools. Since grammars
are expensive to develop, another important concern is the
effective re-use of existing grammatical resources: some grammar
formalisms facilitate this by for example allowing grammar
writers to structure the grammar hierarchically or in terms of
individual classes with modularised behaviour. A further issue is
how to support a team of grammarians working on the same or
related grammars; a notable effort in this area is the Xerox-led
collaborative ParGram project developing parallel grammars for
several different languages.


Objectives

The objectives of the workshop will be to summarise what has been
achieved in the areas of grammar engineering and evaluation, to
establish the common themes between different approaches and to
discuss future trends, with particular emphasis on real-world
applications. The focus will be on grammars rather than parsing
algorithms or the accuracy of parsing systems, on approaches
which enable re-use of resources, and on methods which are
suitable for multilingual systems.

In particular, contributions are solicited in the following areas:

  * Methods of grammar development and discussions of their strengths
  and weaknesses;

  * Standards for encoding grammatical information in a theory-neutral
  fashion;

  * Comparisons of manual techniques with those involving learning from
  treebanks;

  * Techniques for establishing the effectiveness, coverage or quality
  of a grammar;

  * The determination of time or effort required to achieve a level of
  performance or to adapt an existing grammar to a new application
  domain;

  * The application of a grammatical formalism to widely different
  languages; and

  * Issues in porting grammars between languages.


Submissions

Abstracts for workshop contributions should not exceed two A4 pages
(excluding references). An additional title page should state: the
title; author(s); affiliation(s); and contact author's e-mail address,
as well as postal address, telephone and fax numbers.

Submission is to be sent by email, preferably in Postscript or PDF
format, to Richard Sutcliffe by Friday 26 April 2002. Abstracts
will be reviewed by at least 3 members of the program committee.

Formatting instructions for the final full version of papers will be
sent to authors after notification of acceptance.

Accepted papers will appear in the printed proceedings which will be
available to all those who register for the workshop.

The proceedings of all workshops will also be included in the Coling
CD ROM along with the tutorials and the proceedings of the main
conference.

Gentlemen,

With SchlumbergerSema, Lingway won a 3-year contract from Eurostat for
implementing a natural-language access to European Nomenclatures in
the various languages of the EU. The first phase of this project
includes an inventory and qualification of available resources and
parsers for the targeted languages.

We would like to finalize our first evaluation for mid-March.

The selected tools will then be integrated in an application managed
at the EU level.

Our inventory is nearly done for English, Spanish, German and French,
but we would like to drill down the availability for resources in the
other languages.

If you know about a technology (whether resources or parsers), at an
industrial or near-industrial state, can you provide us with detailed
information? We will synthesize the answers back to the list.

COMPUTERM'02: Second Workshop on Computational Terminology invites
a wide range of papers on substantial, original and unpublished
research on all aspects of computational terminology related areas,

 - IR/indexing with domain-dependent lexical perspectives
 - encoding terminology-related information and resources
 - document structuring through terminological information, e.g.
making hypertext through terminological links, etc.
Purely linguistic topics with no relation to computational aspects
and purely application topics without any relation to terms and
terminology as linguistic entity (e.g. n-gram based IR) are out of the
scope of the workshop.

COMPUTERM'02 is the second COLING workshop devoted to computational
terminology. The first, very successful, workshop was held at the
occasion of COLING/ACL'98 at Montreal, Canada in 1998. Selected
papers in the first COMPUTERM'98 workshop were published in Recent
Advances in Computational Terminology (John Benjamins).

Les bases lexicales multilingues sont des serveurs de donn?es lexicales
structur?es. Ces donn?es peuvent ?tre utilis?es soit par des humains
pour d?finir leur propre dictionnaire soit par des applications de
traitement des langues.

Ces dernieres ann?es, nous assistons ? une accumulation de ressources
lexicales dans les laboratoires de traitement automatique de la langue
ainsi que sur Internet. les bases lexicales multilingues tentent de
r?soudre ce probl?me d'accumulation en organisant la manipulation et
l'acc?s ? ces ressources. Ces bases sont un point central de la
recherche dans les sciences du langage et dans le d?veloppement des
technologies de la langue. Comme les bases de donn?es g?nomiques, les
bases lexicales sont complexes, ?voluent, constituent des serveur
richement annot?s et posent de difficiles probl?mes scientifiques dans
de nombreux domaines.

Les buts de cet atelier sont de rendre compte de la recherche existante
dans les bases de donn?es multilingues et d'identifier les probl?mes

				Overview

Multilingual lexical databases are repositories of structured
information to provide an easy access to all available meanings of words
and to allow the creation of a number of computer programs that will
help to analyze texts using these datatabases.

Multilingual lexical databases are repositories of structured lexical
data. This data can be used either by humans to derive their own
dictionary, either by NLP applications.

Over the last decade, we assist to an accumulation of lexical resources
in NLP laboratories and on the Internet. The lexical databases try to
solve this accumulation problem by organizing the manipulation and the
access to these resources. These databases are a central point of
research in the language sciences, and in the development of new human
language technologies. Like genomic databases, lexical databases are
complex, evolving and richly annotated repositories, and pose
interesting challenges for efficient representation, indexing and query.

The goals of the workshop are to take stock of existing research in
multilingual lexical databases and to identify the key problems. More
broadly, the workshop will help define the research questions of the new
Papillon "multilingual lexical database community" and initiate the
interchange of relevant ongoing problems and results between this
community and other communities (lexicography, translation,
human-computer interactions, database community at large).

Papillon is a project of construction and collaborative usage on the web
of a multilingual lexical database and electronic dictionaries derived
in open source (French, English, Japanese, Thai, Lao, vietnamese) The
workshop is expected to attract participants from a range of specialties
including databases, linguistics, computational linguistics, annotation
and markup.

The workshop will address a selection of the following topics:

Abstract

The notion of constraints is broadly used both in formal linguistics (the
constraint-based theories) and in natural language processing (typically
constraint grammars techniques). However, classical approaches don't
really take advantage of the formal and computational properties of this
notion.

I present in this talk a formalism, called Property Grammars, that
represents all linguistic information by means of constraints. I will
show in what sense constraints can constitute an efficient approach for
natural language processing, that offers solutions to difficult problems
such as partial information or interaction between different domains of
linguistic analysis (e.g. prosody/syntax interaction). I illustrate these
aspects with several examples and propose a general solution both in terms
of representation and implementation.

INTRODUCTION

Natural Language Processing (and Computational Linguistics) courses
have been enjoying a large interest in the last few years. More and
more universities are offering both introductory and advanced
classes. Over the years, faculty from different departments have been
developing their classes by introducing and refining new lectures,
software, and projects.  Some of the main challenges in teaching NLP
are:

1. Teaching to a diverse audience, consisting of a mix of students in
   Linguistics, Computer Science, Information Science, and
   Bioinformatics; both undergraduate and graduate; and with a wide
   range of proficiency in linguistics, computer theory, or
   programming.

2. Selecting an appropriate focus for a course, e.g., theory
   vs. applications, symbolic vs. empirical, text-only
   vs. text+speech, etc.

3. Finding an appropriate place of an NLP/CL course within a larger
   curriculum, e.g., in Artificial Intelligence, Computational
   Linguistics, Cognitive Science, or Language Engineering.

4. Finding the right links to related areas, such as Theoretical
   Linguistics, Information Retrieval, Speech Science, Cognitive
   Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Genetic/Molecular Biology.

5. Choosing appropriate assignments to provide the right mix of
   theoretical, programming and data analysis exercises.

6. Designing software for educational purposes and developing
   tutorials on existing software.

This ACL workshop on Effective Tools and Methodologies for Teaching
NLP/CL will address these challenges. The workshop will bring together
college faculty with experience in teaching such courses as well as
future teachers (e.g., current graduate students).


CALL FOR PAPERS

We will be soliciting short papers (4-6 pages) on the following
topics:

1. Effective course lectures

2. Innovative assignments and projects

3. Educational software

4. Web resources

5. Curriculum issues (e.g., developing an effective multi-course CL
   program)

6. Teaching NLP in different departments: Computer Science,
   Linguistics, Information Science, etc.

7. Connecting teaching and research

8. Seminar-style courses

9. Choice of programming languages (and programming requirements in
   general)

10. Teaching NLP in languages other than English

11. Evaluation issues (outcomes assessment, educational measurement,
    etc.)

In addition to these papers, the organizers will be collecting
pointers to educational resources on the Web, including course notes,
assignments, tutorials, software, and demos.

The workshop will feature a panel discussing longer-term activities
such as a mailing list for instructors, an archive of educational
materials, etc.

Submissions should be formatted according to the ACL style guide
(http://www.cs.ualberta.ca/~lindek/acl02/style) and must be in either
PS, PDF, or DOC format. These should be sent electronically to
radev at umich.edu by the deadline shown below. Hard copies will be
accepted only if the authors explicitly make such arrangements the
co-chairs at least one week prior to the official submission date. In
that case, the hard copies will still have to arrive by the submission
date.

We will assemble printed proceedings, however the ultimate goal of
this workshop would be laying the groundwork for further professional
collaboration in teaching NLP/CL, creating an ACL SIG, and building a
clearinghouse for educational materials.

REGISTRATION

Registration fees are $50 for regular participants and $0 (free) for
up to 10 lower income participants (e.g., graduate students and/or
participants from Eastern Europe, Africa, and other disadvantaged
areas of the world).

Candidates for registration fee waivers should indicate their interest
to the program co-chairs by April 22. Authors of accepted papers will
have priority, then authors of rejected papers, then all others.

The conference will be structured around two themes: i) the
interpretation of the verb "be" and of the constructions in which "be"
occurs, and ii) the existential binding of indefinites. Both themes
are related to the notion of existence and one purpose of the
conference is to explore possible connections between these
themes. The conference will center on the formal syntax and semantics
of existence, with a special session on computational treatments of
existence constructions.

Abstracts are invited for 30-minute presentations (plus 10 minutes
discussion) on all subjects relevant to the conference and in
particular on the following topics:

- The semantics of "be": how many interpretations? Is there evidence
across languages that verbs which correspond to "be" have more than
one interpretation? Predication in languages which have more than one
correspondent for "be" (e.g. Spanish).
- The syntax and semantics of constructions in which "be" occurs: the
"there-be" construction (and the definiteness effect), "it is NP",
"that is NP", various copular constructions across languages; clefts
and pseudo-clefts; auxiliary "be" and auxiliary selection.
- "Be"-existentials and "have"-existentials.
- Existence and negation.
- Sources of existential binding for the variable that indefinites
introduce in the logical representation. Syntactic asymmetries with
respect to the source of existential binding (e.g. the spatio-temporal
anchoring of the sentence as binder of indefinite subjects versus
semantic incorporation for indefinite objects). If indefinites
introduce a function variable, as has been argued by some in recent
years, how is this variable bound?
- Existential presupposition and degrees of (in)definiteness.
- Computational treatment (analysis and generation) of existence
constructions.

The languages of the conference are English and French.

Flexibility Principles in Boolean Semantics
The Interpretation of Coordination, Plurality, and Scope in Natural Language

Since the early work of Montague, Boolean semantics and its subfield of generalized quantifier
theory have become the model-theoretic foundation for the study of meaning in natural languages.
This book uses this framework to develop a new semantic theory of central linguistic phenomena
involving coordination, plurality, and scope. The proposed theory makes use of the standard Boolean
interpretation of conjunction, a choice-function account of indefinites, and a novel semantics of
plurals that is not based on the distributive/collective distinction. The key to unifying these
mechanisms is a version of Montagovian semantics that is augmented by flexibility principles:
semantic operations that have no counterpart in phonology.

This is the first book to cover these areas in a way that is both linguistically comprehensive and
formally explicit. On one hand, it addresses questions of primarily linguistic concern: the semantic
functions of words like and and or in different languages, the interpretation of indefinites and
their scope, and the semantic typology of noun phrases and predicates. On the other hand, it
addresses formal questions that are motivated by the treatment of these linguistic problems: the use
of Boolean algebras in linguistics, the proper formalization of choice functions within generalized
quantifier theory, and the extension of this theory to the domain of plurality. While primarily
intended for readers with a background in theoretical linguistics, the book will also be of interest
to researchers and advanced students in logic, computational linguistics, philosophy of language,
and artificial intelligence.

Yoad Winter is a lecturer in the Computer Science Department at Technion-Israel Institute of

Background

The Evaluation Working Group of the ISLE project has organised a
series of workshops on MT evaluation. Each of these workshops has
contained a practical component, where participants have been asked to
carry out exercises involving MT evaluation. These workshops
proved to be very illuminating, and have stimulated ongoing work
in the area, much of it was reported in the latest workshop in the
series, held at the MT Summit meeting in September 2001.

Results from previous workshops can be consulted at
   http://www.issco.unige.ch/projects/isle/ewg.html,
and the proceedings from the MT Summit in Santiago de Compostela can
be requested from the organisers.

The workshop at LREC 2002 will continue the series, and will consist
primarily of hands-on exercises defined to investigate empirically a
small number of metrics proposed for evaluation of MT systems and the
potential relationships between them.

In an effort to develop a more systematic MT evaluation
methodology, recent work in the EAGLES and ISLE projects, funded by
the EU and NSF, has created a framework of characteristics in terms
of which MT evaluations and systems, past and future, can be described
and classified.  The resulting taxonomy can be consulted at:
   http://issco-www.unige.ch/projects/isle/taxonomy2/.

Previous workshops have led to critical analysis of measures drawn
from the literature, and to the creation of new measures.  Of the
latter, several are aimed at eventual automation of the evaluation
task and/or at finding relatively simple and inexpensive measures
which correlate well with more complex measures that are hard
to automate or expensive to implement.

Given this background, the time has come to concentrate on
systematizing the actual evaluation measures themselves.  For any
particular measure, one would like to know how accurate it is, how
expensive and/or difficult to apply, how independent of other measures,
etc.  Very little of this type of information is available to date.

This workshop will focus on these issues.  The organizers will provide
the participants in advance with the materials required to:
  - perform a small evaluation, using one or two measures
  - perform a cross-measure analysis of the resulting scores
  - create a general characterization of the measure's performance.

The participants will then apply these measures to the data made
available, and bring their results to the workshop in order to
integrate them with other participants' results.

The overall intention of the workshop is to discover, empirically,
what kinds of characteristics are easily determinable, and how
accurate they actually are.  Only through a process of assessing the
evaluations can we eventually arrive at a small but accurate set of
measures that adequately cover the set of phenomena MT system
evaluators, system developers, and potential MT users care about.

It is our hope that participants will feel inspired to continue
this process, so that the combined results can be assembled later,
integrated into the framework, and become a valuable resource to
anyone interested in MT evaluation.

(2) Les objets traditionnellement consid?r?s comme appartenant au TAL
tels que les formalismes grammaticaux et les algorithmes d'analyse
linguistique, en particulier syntaxique, sont-ils sp?cifiques du
domaine ? Que dire de ces objets construits dans le cadre du TAL, tels
les ATN, ? la fois formalismes et dispositifs d'analyse ? Les
formalismes comme LFG, TAG, HPSG, sont-ils rattach?s ou rattachables
au TAL ?

(3) Les syst?mes de TAL, fond?s sur des m?thodes probabilistes, grands
corpus ou m?moires de traduction mettent-ils en ?uvre un mod?le
probabiliste du texte, du langage, des langues, ou bien ne sont-ils

but ? atteindre, est devenue un champ d'investigation en tant que

aborder dans ce num?ro, ? partir d'une r?flexion sur des syst?mes ou

SCOPE and TOPICS

Under the NLP label, several conceptions can be found, accounting for
non-consensual approaches at work in the domain: at the same time an
institutionally acknowledged trend, a scientific discipline, a field
for applications, even for industrial ones, at the crossroads of
computer science and linguistics.  This special issue of TAL is
devoted to epistemological problems of NLP where non-consensual
conceptions are expected to be explored. The following topics and
issues can be addressed:

(1) It seems that the French word for ``computational linguistics'' is
``traitement automatique des langues'', but it is doubtful that both
terms cover the same discipline as, historically, they have separate
anchorages, either institutional, geographical or scientific. Besides,
in English, a specific term exists: ``Natural Language
Processing''. It is well known that, in French tradition, different
names stood out as landmarks in the history of the area:
``linguistique alg?brique'', ``linguistique quantitative'',
``linguistique informatique'', ``linguistique computationnelle'', and
more recently ``industries de la langue'' and ``ing?nierie
linguistique''.  What does this diversity mean? Which are the
theoretic statements underlying them? What are the links between them?
What are their respective contributions?

(2) Are objects, traditionally considered as belonging to NLP such as
grammar formalisms and linguistic analysis algorithms, namely parsing,
really specific of the domain? What about projects as ATNs, which were
built within NLP and are both formalisms and analysis device? Do
formalisms such as LFG, TAG, HPSG, belong to NLP? Or can they belong
to it?

(3) Do NLP systems, such as large corpora or translation memories,
which are founded on statistical methods, actually implement
probabilistic models of texts, or are they mere tools? In this case,
which tools are appropriate for which tasks?

(4) NLP evaluation, which is necessary when systems are used as tools
or when industrial production is at stake, is now considered as an
investigation field of its own. The numerous works connected to this
area allow taking stock of the available evaluation methods, their
theoretical grounds, their options and their results.

These are the epistemological questions which we wish to be addressed
in the special issue, based on a reflexion either on current NLP
systems and practices, or on systems that were developed during the
fifty years of NLP history.  Fifty years are rather short for history,
but they allow reflexivity, a requirement when historical studies are
at stake.

Contributions are expected from NLP agents reflecting on their
practice.  Contributions from science historians are also welcome.

Call for Papers

The sixth EAMT Workshop will take place on 14-15 November 2002
hosted by the Centre for Computational Linguistics, UMIST,
Manchester, England.

Organised by the European Association for Machine Translation,
in association with the Natural Language Translation Specialist
Group of the British Computer Society, the Workshop will focus
on the topic of:

                    Teaching Machine Translation

The following topics are of interest:

   why and to whom should MT be taught?
   teaching the theoretical background of MT: linguistics,
      computer science, translation theory
   addressing preconceptions about MT in the classroom
   the use of commercial MT programs in hands-on teaching
   teaching computational aspects of MT to non-computational students
   web-based distance learning of MT
   MT education and industry: bridging the gap between academia
      and the real world
   teaching pre- and post-editing skills to MT users
   teaching MT evaluation
   building modules or `toy' MT systems in the laboratory
   experiences of the evaluation of MT instruction
   the role of MT in language learning
   translation studies and MT
   etc.

We invite submissions of an extended abstract of your proposed paper,
up to two pages, summarizing the main points that will be made in the
actual paper.

Submissions will be reviewed by members of the Programme Committee.
Authors of accepted papers will be asked to submit a full version
of the paper, maximum 12 pages, which will be included in the
proceedings.

A stylefile for accepted submissions will be available in due course.

Initially, an extended abstract should be sent, preferably by email
as an attachment in any of the standard formats (doc, html, pdf, ps)
or as plain text, to Harold.Somers at umist.ac.uk.

Authors are invited to submit original, previously unpublished work and
should provide sufficient details to allow the Program Committee to
evaluate its validity, quality, and relevance to the conference.

Submissions will be reviewed by at least 2 specialists in the domain.
Decisions will be based on the following criteria:
   o Importance and originality of the paper
   o Accuracy of the scientific and technical content
   o Comparison of the results obtained with other relevant work
   o Layout and clarity of the paper

One specific session for posters (85 x 120 cm) will be scheduled. Poster
submission follows the same rules as of paper submission, BUT must not
exceed 6 pages.

********** TALKS **********

Paper presentations will be of a 20 minutes duration, followed by 10
minutes dedicated to answering questions.
It will be possible to use an overhead projector or a video-projector.

********** PROCEEDINGS **********

Accepted papers will be published in the pre-proceedings and in the
proceedings of the conference.

We will distribute the pre-proceedings to the participants at the
conference and we will send the proceedings as soon as they are printed.

We expect the proceedings to appear in the Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in
Computer Science Series after the conference. Today available: LNCS 1260
(WIA'96), LNCS 1436 (WIA'97), LNCS 1660 (WIA'98) and LNCS 2088 (CIAA?2000).

Extended versions of selected papers from the proceedings of the conference
series are usually retained for publication in special issues of either
Theoretical Computer Science (TCS) or International Journal of Foundations
of Computer Science (IJFCS), alternating each year. Today available: TCS
231 (WIA'97) and TCS 269 (WIA'98). The CIAA 2002 special issue will appear
in IJFCS.

Overview

Grammars are central components of many types of NLP system. The
workshop will be concerned with methods for the effective
engineering and evaluation of grammars with particular emphasis
on their use in real-world applications.

Background

Recent years have seen the development of techniques and
resources to support robust, deep grammatical analysis of
language in real-world domains, for instance in flexible
human-computer dialog systems (e.g.  the Dutch OVIS prototype
train information system) and speech-to-speech translation
(e.g. the Verbmobil system). The demands of these types of tasks
have driven significant advances in areas such as parser
efficiency, hybrid statistical / symbolic approaches to
disambiguation, and the acquisition of large-scale lexicons. In
response to these successes deep language processing is starting
to be deployed in commercial applications such as automated email
response.

The effective development, maintenance and enhancement of
grammars is a central issue in such efforts, and the size and
complexity of realistic grammars forces these processes to be
tackled in ways that have much in common with software
engineering. Thus, two common metrics defined over grammars are
coverage and degree of overgeneration; these can be evaluated by
applying the grammar to manually-constructed test suites of
grammatical and ungrammatical inputs, ideally supported by
automated profiling and visualisation tools. Examples of test
suites include those that have been produced on the TSNLP, DiET
and Verbmobil projects, while the Saarbruecken [incr tsdb()]
system is one of the established profiling tools. Since grammars
are expensive to develop, another important concern is the
effective re-use of existing grammatical resources: some grammar
formalisms facilitate this by for example allowing grammar
writers to structure the grammar hierarchically or in terms of
individual classes with modularised behaviour. A further issue is
how to support a team of grammarians working on the same or
related grammars; a notable effort in this area is the Xerox-led
collaborative ParGram project developing parallel grammars for
several different languages.


Objectives

The objectives of the workshop will be to summarise what has been
achieved in the areas of grammar engineering and evaluation, to
establish the common themes between different approaches and to
discuss future trends, with particular emphasis on real-world
applications. The focus will be on grammars rather than parsing
algorithms or the accuracy of parsing systems, on approaches
which enable re-use of resources, and on methods which are
suitable for multilingual systems.

In particular, contributions are solicited in the following areas:

  * Methods of grammar development and discussions of their strengths
  and weaknesses;

  * Standards for encoding grammatical information in a theory-neutral
  fashion;

  * Comparisons of manual techniques with those involving learning from
  treebanks;

  * Techniques for establishing the effectiveness, coverage or quality
  of a grammar;

  * The determination of time or effort required to achieve a level of
  performance or to adapt an existing grammar to a new application
  domain;

  * The application of a grammatical formalism to widely different
  languages; and

  * Issues in porting grammars between languages.


Submissions

Abstracts for workshop contributions should not exceed two A4 pages
(excluding references). An additional title page should state: the
title; author(s); affiliation(s); and contact author's e-mail address,
as well as postal address, telephone and fax numbers.

Submission is to be sent by email, preferably in Postscript or PDF
format, to Richard Sutcliffe by Friday 26 April 2002. Abstracts
will be reviewed by at least 3 members of the program committee.

Formatting instructions for the final full version of papers will be
sent to authors after notification of acceptance.

Accepted papers will appear in the printed proceedings which will be
available to all those who register for the workshop.

The proceedings of all workshops will also be included in the Coling
CD ROM along with the tutorials and the proceedings of the main
conference.
