From alexis.nasr at LINGUIST.JUSSIEU.FR Tue Sep 3 07:32:43 2002 From: alexis.nasr at LINGUIST.JUSSIEU.FR (Alexis Nasr) Date: Tue, 3 Sep 2002 09:32:43 +0200 Subject: Appel: Revue TAL : Automated Learning of Language Models Message-ID: Automated Learning of Language Models Deadline for submission : October 7, 2002 Issue coordinated by Michèle Jardino (CNRS, LIMSI), and Marc El-Beze (LIA, University of Avignon) . Language Models (LM) play a crucial role in the working of Automated Natural Language Processing systems, when real-life problems (often very large ones) are being dealt with. Instances are Speech Recognition, Machine Translation and Information Retrieval. If we want these systems to adapt to new applications, or to follow the evolution in user behaviour, we need to automatize the learning of parameters in the models we use. Adaptation should occur in advance or in real time. Some applications do not allow us to build an adequate corpus, either from a quantitative or qualitative point of view. The gathering of learning data is made easier by the richness of Web resources, but in that huge mass, we have to effectively separate the wheat from the chaff. When asked about the optimal size for a learning corpus, are we satisfied to answer "The bigger, the better"? Rather than training one LM on a gigantic learning corpus, would it not be advisable to fragment this corpus into linguistically coherent segments, and learn several language models, whose scores might be combined when doing the test (model mixture)? In the case of n-gram models, which is the optimal value for n? Should it be fixed or variable? A larger value allows us to capture linguistic constraints over a context which goes beyond the mere two preceding words of the classic trigram. However, increasing n threatens us with serious coverage problems. Which is the best trade-off between these two opposite constraints? How can we smooth models in order to approximate phenomena that have not been learned? Which alternatives are to be chosen, using which more general information (lesser-order n-grams, n-classes?) Beyond the traditional opposition between numerical and knowledge-based approaches, there is a consensus about the introduction of rules into stochastic models, or probability into grammars, hoping to get the best of both strategies. Hybrid models can be conceived in several ways, depending on which choices are made regarding both of their sides, and also, the place where coupling occurs. Because of discrepancies between the language a grammar generates, and actually observed syntagms, some researchers decided to reverse the situation and derive the grammar from observed facts. However, this method yields disappointing results, since it does not perform any better than n -gram methods, and is perhaps inferior. Shouldn't we introduce here a good deal of supervision, if we want to reach this goal? --------------------------------------------------------------------- Topics (non-exhaustive list) In this special issue, we would like to publish either innovative papers, or surveys and prospective essays dealing with Language Models (LM), Automated Learning of their parameters, and covering one of following subtopics: Language Models and Resources: determination of the adequate lexicon determination of the adequate corpus Topical Models LM with fixed or variable history Probabilistic Grammars Grammatical Inference Hybrid Language Models Static and dynamic adaptation of LMs Dealing with the Unknown Modelling words which do not belong to the vocabulary Methods for smoothing LMs Supervised and unsupervised learning of LMs Automated classification of basic units Introducing linguistic knowledge into LMs Methods for LM learning EM, MMI, others? Evaluation of Language Models Complexity and LM theory Applications: - Speech Recognition - Machine Translation - Information Retrieval --------------------------------------------------------------------- Format Papers (25 pages maximum) are to be submitted in Word ou LaTeX. Style sheets are available at HERMES : < http://www.hermes-science.com/ >. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Language Articles can be written either in French or in English, but English will be accepted from non-French speaking authors only. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Deadlines Submission deadline is October 7, 2002. The tutorials for EACL 2003 will be held on April 12 in two sessions (morning and afternoon). Tutorial speakers will have an opportunity to disseminate state-of-the-art techniques and approaches in the areas of their expertise to the CL/NLP research community. Members from all segments of the CL/NLP and related fields are invited to submit proposals for review. Each tutorial should be well-focused so that its core content can be covered in three hours of lecture time (including the break). However, in exceptional cases six-hour tutorial slots are possible as well. Submission Details Proposals for tutorials should be no more than four pages in length, and should contain: a.. a brief but technical description of the tutorial topic; b.. the names, postal addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of the tutorial speakers, with brief descriptions of their technical background; c.. the name of one tutorial speaker with an email address as the primary contact; d.. a list of audio-visual and computer requirements and special room requirements, if there are any. Proposals should be submitted by electronic mail, in any of the forms (rtf, pdf or ps) no later than 15 November 2002. Please submit your proposals and any inquiries (subject line should be: "EACL-03 TUTORIAL PROPOSAL") to: Dan Cristea - dcristea at infoiasi.ro University "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" of Iasi Faculty of Computer Science 16, Berthelot St., 6600 - Iasi, Romania Tutorial Speakers' Responsibilities 1. Tutorial speakers must provide descriptions of their tutorials for inclusion in the Conference Registration. The description must be provided as follows: a.. an rtf and a pdf version that fits onto 1/2 page; b.. an ASCII version that can be included with email announcements; c.. an HTML version that can be included on the Conference home page. 2. Finances: The current ACL policy is that tutorials are reimbursed at the following rate: $500 per session plus $25 per registrant in the range 21-50 plus $15 per registrant in excess of 50. Note that this is per tutorial, not per presenter: multiple presenters will split the proceeds, the default assumption being an even split. The ACL does not usually cover travel expenses except where the presenter(s) cannot get them through the usual mechanisms: for ACL members we assume that they would be coming to the meeting anyway. For people who are not ACL members, we would expect to pay for costs that they cannot get reimbursed elsewhere. If they attend the conference, tutorial presenters must register for EACL03. 3. Tutorialists will prepare all the tutorial materials. An up-to-date version of the Call for Tutorial Proposals is available at the address: http://www.conferences.hu/EACL03. EACL-03 will take place in Budapest, Hungary, April 12-17, 2003 with workshops being held on Sunday and Monday, April 13 and 14, 2003. * Workshop topics EACL-03 workshops provide organizers and participants with an opportunity to focus intensively on a specific topic within computational linguistics. Often, workshops concentrate on specific topics of technical interest (e.g., parsing technologies), particular areas of application for language processing technologies (e.g., NLP applied to IR), or community-wide issues that deserve attention (e.g., standardization of resources and tools). We welcome proposals on any topic that is of interest to the EACL community, but we particularly encourage proposals that broaden the scope of our community through the consideration of new or interdisciplinary techniques or applications. We also encourage topics that are specific to the EACL community such as resources and tools for European or Mediterranean languages. * Workshop format Traditionally, workshops are shaped as mini-conferences, but we encourage proposers to consider other formats that exploit the fact that smaller settings allow for more interaction between participants (discussions, panels, working sessions). The default duration of a workshop is one day, but longer or shorter durations can be proposed (but should be justified). Please note that capacity limitations may cause us to request the organizers to shorten a workshop or to merge it with another workshop in a related area. * Financial guidelines The workshop organisers will benefit from the standard logistic facilities provided for the conference e.g., room, equipment, coffee, proceedings. Any additional cost should be covered by the organisers (especially invited speakers, PC meetings etc.). * Registration fees Participants pay a registration fee which is dependent on the duration of the workshop. Participants not registered for the main conference, pay a higher fee. * Proposals Workshop proposals should provide sufficient information to evaluate the quality and importance of the topic, and the size of the interested community. Proposals should be 2-4 pages and contain the following information: * A title and brief description of the workshop topic. * The target audience and projected number of participants along with support for the projected count. Supporting evidence could include a list of potential submitters, a list of conferences that contained papers on the proposed topic, the number of new companies focused on this topic, or recent funding initiatives that address this topic. * Resource needs such as room size and number of days. Include any special requirements for technical support (computer infrastructure, etc.). * The name, postal address, phone number, e-mail address, and webpage of each chair. In addition, indicate the chairs' background in the workshop area. * A preliminary programme committee Proposals should be submitted by electronic mail, in plain ASCII text, as soon as possible but no later than OCTOBER 1, 2002. The subject line should be: "EACL-03 WORKSHOP PROPOSAL". The aim of this project is to integrate language into a haptic workbench to create a new learning environment. The position is located at North Ryde in Sydney, Australia. Recent advances in new technologies such as virtual environments and natural language generation offer many new opportunities for experientially based training. In particular, immersive environments that incorporate haptic and audio interface components show great promise at being highly effective and efficient in many application domains. Ideally, though, a training environment should include a tightly integrated combination of modalities and media for input as well as output. This fellowship will examine this goal and aim to demonstrate the training effectiveness of employing a tightly integrated set of advanced natural interface technologies. A particular focus of the work will be the addition of language to the hapto-audio-visual training environment, to provide multimodal instruction and feedback. The successful applicant will have a recent PhD in human computer interaction, computational linguistics or a related discipline. Demonstrable research skills in natural language technologies or computer graphics will be advantageous and a proven ability to program in C++, Python, and Lisp highly desirable. The fellowship offers a great opportunity to collaborate with scientists from CSIRO research teams studying virtual environments, intelligent interactive technologies, and telecollaboration. A comprehensive 3 year development plan will be provided ensuring that over the period of the fellowship you will develop skills, partnerships and networks, which are valued both within CSIRO and industry. The discussions will be centered, but not limited to, the following topics: - Building new resources - Acquiring lexical information - Maintaining resources - Representing lexical information (i.e. polysemy, collocation links, multiword expressions, predicate-argument structure) - Using lexical information in applications - Specialization and customization for specific applications - Links between different frameworks - Sharing lexical resources - Multilinguality in the lexicon - Standardization and evaluation Papers on on-line ressources can make reference to any semantic lexicons (Wordnet, Framenet, Meaning-text theory, etc.), but a link to Generative Lexicon theory is desirable (Pustejovsky 1995). Key topics are: - How to build a Generative Lexicon? - How a Generative Lexicon can be extracted from existing ressources or corpora? - How to connect qualia structures with other lexical information? - How lexical information is represented in different frameworks? - Philosophical differences between frameworks - Critical perspectives The conference will be held over a period of two and a half days. Long (45 min) and short (20 min) presentations are foreseen. Invited speakers include Nicoletta Calzolari (Istituto Di Linguistica Computazionale, Pisa), Christiane Fellbaum (NEC, Princeton Univ), Charles J. Fillmore (International Computer Science Institute, Berkeley) and James Pustejovsky (Brandeis University, Brandeis). Submission procedure: Authors should submit an anonymous paper of at most 7 single-column pages (including references) using a 12' body font size together with a separate page specifying the author's name, affiliation, address, e-mail address, title and type of paper (long or short). Please e-mail proposals and any inquiries to the Workshop Chair, Steven Krauwer (steven.krauwer at let.uu.nl) * Timetable of Important Dates: Workshop proposals due: Oct. 1, 2002 Notification of acceptance: Oct. 7, 2002 Deadline for receipt of workshop Call for Papers and other publicity material: Oct. 21, 2002 Send out Call for Papers: Nov. 1, 2002 Suggested deadline for workshop paper submissions: Jan. 1, 2003 Suggested deadline for notification of workshop paper acceptance: Jan. 21, 2003 Suggested deadline for camera-ready workshop papers: Feb. 13, 2003 Workshop Dates: Apr. 13-14, 2003 * Workshop Committee: Steven Krauwer (ELSNET / Utrecht University), Chair Jean-Pierre Chanod (Xerox Research Centre Europe, Grenoble) Ernst Buchberger (?FAI, Vienna) * Additional Information: Conference website: http://www.conferences.hu/EACL03 Workshop website: http://www.elsnet.org/workshops-eacl2003.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Message diffus? par la liste Langage Naturel Informations, abonnement : http://www.biomath.jussieu.fr/LN/LN-F/ English version : http://www.biomath.jussieu.fr/LN/LN/ Archives : http://listserv.linguistlist.org/archives/ln.html La liste LN est parrain?e par l'ATALA (Association pour le Traitement Automatique des Langues) Information et adh?sion : http://www.atala.org/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- From alexis.nasr at LINGUIST.JUSSIEU.FR Thu Sep 26 16:16:08 2002 From: alexis.nasr at LINGUIST.JUSSIEU.FR (Alexis Nasr) Date: Thu, 26 Sep 2002 18:16:08 +0200 Subject: Jobs: Post Doc Fellowship in Multimodal Interaction : Macquarie University, Sydney Australia Message-ID: [Apologies for duplicate postings -- please feel free to re-distribute] Post Doctoral Fellowship in Multimodal Interaction: Integrating Language into a virtual environment LOCATION: CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences Macquarie University, Sydney Australia SALARY RANGE: A$52K - A$66K + superannuation ROLE: We are seeking to appoint a high-calibre Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work in a new exciting project, within a multidisciplinary team, to develop advanced multimodal natural interface technologies for effective skills training.
