Klingler : dominique.klingler at tiscali.fr (ILPGA, Paris III, France), S. Porhiel : sylvieporhiel at ucy.ac.cy (University of Cyprus, Cyprus) Call for papers On an everyday basis it is impossible to escape texts. We deal with them regularly and they play an important role at different levels: everybody produce texts, understand/decode and appreciate them either posted or verbally. One can consider that the text is a global unit of verbal production (written or spoken), the emergence of which is based on mental activities. Such a production also conveys organized information aimed at an addressee. As a communicative occurrence, the text is a set of sentences linked by a network of relations we are liable to interpret, to understand and to produce: this is linked to everybody's capacity to distinguish between what is coherent and what is not. Indeed, if there exist relations between adjacent sentences (local coherence), they also intervene between other parts of the text (global coherence). It is this particular interaction between two types of relation that makes it possible to access the meaning of the text. Likewise it is our ability to set on procedures creating such relations that prompts textual production and assures its communicative efficiency. Whatever the syntactic theory considered, a finished set of relational and positional constraints weigh on the sentence. And yet, beyond the phrasal system we enter the textual system, the organisational principles of which have nothing to do with syntax. One can then legitimately wonder how one goes from short spans (the sentence being the most representative example) to wider spans, and what cognitive processes come into play during such transitions, what linguistic markers code the coherence relations. Such is the aim of this conference with a view to conjoining interdisciplinary perspectives about the text regarding its interpretation/comprehension and production. The direction of this conference is then to conjunct points of view and to compare how linguistics, psycholinguistics but also Natural Language Automatic Treatment that uses the outcomes of linguistic analyses, consider the text and deal with it. We invite authors to: submit abstracts taking into consideration the topics of the conference; submit research that will have the text as object and will not have been published; envisage the text from perspectives that can be diverse and possibly conjoint; present robust methodological tools, hypotheses, opening perspectives and present results. The workshop series is a joint initiative of LORIA (Nancy) and MPI (Saarbrücken). The workshop itself will take place in Nancy, October 20-21 2003. http://www.loria.fr/~duchier/Lorraine-Saarland/index.html Both in Lorraine and in the Saarland, considerable interest and active research efforts have started to gravitate around the syntax/semantics interface. Our objective with this workshop is to bring together the many researchers who are involved in these efforts, to report on e.g. formal, computational, and empirical issues, to increase mutual awareness and improve lines of communication, and to foster collaboration on the integration of computational semantics into grammar frameworks. (while there is a certain regional bias in this workshop, we welcome submissions from anywhere). The idea is to construct the workshop program around presentations (on the basis of reviewed papers), a panel discussion, and a session of informal demos. Authors are invited to submit 4-page extended abstracts (for presentation), 1-page position papers for the panel, and 3-page abstracts for demos. IMPORTANT: Please inform us of your _intent_ to participate as early as possible (by emailing to lorraine-saarland at ps.uni-sb.de) PAPERS We welcome submissions on all aspects of the syntax/semantics interface, including formal, computational and empirical issues, as well as on applications. We are particularly keen on recent developments, work in progress, and prospective projects, in other words, all contributions which may serve to increase the mutual awareness of on-going research and to encourage the formation of joint research efforts. Merely as a suggestion, we provide here a non-exhaustive list of possible topics: formalisms: - grammatical and metagrammatical formalisms - constraint formalisms computational issues (processing, algorithms, constraints): - processing tree descriptions computational semantics - application of the syntax/semantics interface in the service of computational semantics corpus-based and empirical research: - semantics annotations - learning - preferences - statistical methods, robustness PANEL DISCUSSION Our theme is: "description, processing and integration of multiple sources of information in the modeling and computational analysis of natural language". We are especially interested in the integrative aspect of this enterprise which not only touches on all aspects of computational linguistics, but also reaches across the border into other areas such as ontologies and the semantic web. IMPORTANT DATES - Deadline for submissions: September 10, 2003 - Notification of acceptance: September 19, 2003 - Workshop: October 20-21, 2003 LOCAL ARRANGEMENTS There will be no registration fee, and we will provide proceedings, lunch, and coffee breaks. However, due to the strong local character of the workshop, everyone should make their own arrangements for accommodations (although, if you need help, please email to lorraine-saarland at ps.uni-sb.de). We will also organize a dinner at a restaurant on the evening of Day 1 for those interested. Desmontils et al. ---------- CALL FOR PAPERS ------------------------------------------------ The Semantic Web aims to add a machine tractable, re-purposeable layer to compliment the existing web of natural language hypertext. In order to realise this vision, the creation of semantic annotation, the linking of web pages to ontologies, and the creation, evolution and interrelation of ontologies must become automatic or semi-automatic processes. In the context of new work on distributed computation, Semantic Web Services (SWSs) go beyond current services by adding ontologies and formal knowledge to support description, discovery, negotiation, mediation and composition. This formal knowledge is often strongly related to informal materials. For example, a service for multi-media content delivery over broadband networks might incorporate conceptual indices of the content, so that a smart VCR (such as next generation TiVO) can reason about programmes to suggest to its owner. Alternatively, a service for B2B catalogue publication has to translate between existing semi-structured catalogues and the more formal catalogues required for SWS purposes. To make these types of services cost-effective we need automatic knowledge harvesting from all forms of content that contain natural language text or spoken data. Other services do not have this close connection with informal content, or will be created from scratch using Semantic Web authoring tools. For example, printing or compute cycle or storage services. In these cases the opposite need is present: to document services for the human reader using natural language generation. This workshop will provide a forum for workers in the field of human language technology for the Semantic Web and for Semantic Web Services to present their latest results. The aim is to provide a snapshot of the state of the art, dealing with a wide range of issues, including but not limited to: * automatic and semi-automatic annotation of web pages; * semantic indexing and retrieval of documents, combining the strengths of IE and IR; * integration of data about language in language processing components with ontological data; * robustness across genres and domains; * ease of embedding in Semantic Web applications; * ontology learning, evolving and merging; * automatic web service description augmentation; * automatic semantic structure documentation; * language technology for automatic Web service discovery; * adaptation of generation techniques to SWS applications. The themes of the workshop have partly emerged from the Special Interest Group on Language Technologies and the Semantic Web (SIG5), part of the OntoWeb thematic network (http://ontoweb-lt.dfki.de/). ---------- AUDIENCE ------------------------------------------------------- The issues addressed by the workshop are at the core of the Semantic Web enterprise. The killer applications that demonstrate the potential of this technology to a mass market have yet to emerge, and will likely not do so until a much larger amount of data is available. The techniques covered by this workshop are one of the most important routes to generating this data. The workshop is relevant to: * researchers from the Human Language Technology areas; * researchers from the Ontology and Knowledge Acquisition and Management areas; * industrial technology providers involved in Knowledge Management, Information Integration, Information and Library Science, Web Services. SOMMAIRE Ch. 1. The workshop series is a joint initiative of LORIA (Nancy) and MPI (Saarbr?cken). TOULOUSE, Universit? Toulouse-Le Mirail Contact: Pascale Vergely Contact Email: vergely at tls.cena.fr APPEL ? COMMUNICATIONS ? ---------- ORGANIZING COMMITTEE ------------------------------------------- Hamish Cunningham - http://www.dcs.shef.ac.uk/~hamish Atanas Kiryakov - http://www.sirma.bg/ak.htm Ying Ding - http://www.cs.vu.nl/~ying ---------- PROGRAMME COMMITTEE -------------------------------------------- Alexander Maedche, Robert Bosch Gmbh, Germany Aldo Gangemi, Laboratory for Applied Ontology, ISTC-CNR, Italy Asun Gomez-Perez, Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, Spain Christopher A. Up-to-date information can be found at: http://www.univ-ubs.fr/euralex2004 Topics Papers, posters, and software demonstrations are invited on all topics of lexicography, including, but not limited to, the following fields, which are the main focus of the congress: 1.Computational Lexicography and Lexicology. 2.The Dictionary-Making Process. 3.Reports on Lexicographical and Lexicological Projects. 4.Bilingual Lexicography. 5.Lexicography for Specialised Languages - Terminology and Terminography. 6.Historical and Scholarly Lexicography and Etymology. 7.Dictionary Use. 8.Phraseology and Collocation. 9.Lexicological Issues of Lexicographical Relevance. 10.Other topics. The main topics are not meant to exclude any lexicographic topic. Papers, posters, and demonstrations that are relevant to the congress, but which do not fit into any of the categories 1-9, will be reviewed nonetheless and considered for presentation. Papers Individual presentations should be timed for 30 minutes, and will be followed by a 10-minute discussion period. Short papers and project notes There will be opportunities for short papers and project notes. These will be allowed 20 minutes with a 10-minute discussion period. There are no restrictions on language of presentations, but unfortunately it is not possible to offer interpretation. Software demonstrations We are particularly interested in well-prepared software demonstrations, presentations of electronic dictionaries, corpora, tools, etc. These demonstrations will be allowed a 20-minute time slot at the congress (they may possibly be presented twice). Technical facilities will be available. Posters A poster session is planned. Appropriate facilities will be provided on the Congress site. Submissions Submissions may be one of the following types: Contributed papers, Software demonstrations, Posters. All submissions will be reviewed by two or three members of the referees panel. The programme will be selected by the programme committee. Submissions proposing software demonstrations should include a description of the functions, underlying approach and implementation of the software, possibly an indication of a URL, and hardware/software requirements. Authors should send five hard copies before 30th October 2003. In addition, a compacted electronic version by email would be appreciated. Email submission may be used, but the hardcopy submission in five copies is mandatory. Format Contributed Papers: 6-8 pages, double-spaced; Software Demonstrations: 4 pages, double-spaced; Posters: 1-2 pages, double-spaced; Front page: Title of the paper/software demonstration/poster; Name(s), affiliation(s) and address(es) of the author(s); Abstract (10-15 lines); In the top right corner: indication of the topic category. SOMMAIRE Ch. 1.
