Lexical resources play an essential role in these information systems. Such lexical resources need to provide information on many languages in a common framework and should be (re)usable in many applications (for automatic or human use). Many centers have been involved in national, european and international projects dedicated to building harmonized language resources and creating expertise in the maintenance and further development of standardized linguistic data. These resources include dictionaries, lexicons, thesauri, wordnets, and annotated corpora developed along the lines of best practices and recommendations. However, since the late 90's most efforts in scaling up these resources remain the responsibility of the local authorities, usually, with very low funding (if any) and few opportunities for academic recognition of this work. Hence, it is not surprising that many of the resource holders and developers have become reluctant to give free access to the latest resources. It is therefore currently rather unclear what the actual status is of these language resources. The goal of this workshop is to study problems involved in the development/management/reuse of lexical resources in a multilingual context. Moreover, this workshop will provide a forum for reviewing the state of language resources. The workshop is meant to bring to the international community qualitative and quantitative information about the most recent developments in the area of linguistic resources and their use in applications. As the workshop takes place in Europe, special attention will be given to submissions on resources for European languages (especially Central and Eastern European languages), but submission of innovative developments involving any language will be welcome. The intent of the workshop is not only to review academic developments but also to hear from industry, how these resources are used in new technology developments and what the current needs are in the field. Presentations, project notes and position papers are welcome. WORKSHOP TOPICS --------------- Authors of papers on multilingual linguistic ressources are encouraged to apply. Papers could be on - but not limited to - any of the following topics: - models for language/application-independent linguistic data - linguistic data acquisition and maintenance - building multilingual linguistic resources - lexical architectures to link data between languages - use of linguistic resources for applications in a multilingual context - reuse of existing lexical resources in a specific multilingual application - human use of lexical resources in a multilingual context - quality evaluation and standardization SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS ----------------------- Papers should be original, hence report on previously unpublished work. They should emphasize completed rather than intended work. Papers submitted to other conferences must reflect this fact on the title page. As the review process will not be blind, papers should contain the names and affiliations of authors. Submissions must be electronic only, and should consist of full papers of max. 8 pages (inclusive of references, tables, figures and equations). Project notes and position papers should not exceed 4 pages. Authors should follow the COLING 2004 formating guidelines, available at: http://www.issco.unige.ch/coling2004/coling2004downloads.html. All submissions should be made through the MLR2004 workshop web site's submission form (http://mlr2004.imag.fr/). They should consist of a single PDF file. Before submitting your document, please verify that all non-standard fonts are correctly embedded in your PDF document (you can do this by disabling the "Use Local Font" option when viewing you PDF document with Adobe Reader). Formating requirements for the final version of accepted papers will be posted as soon as they become available. INTEX includes tools to create and maintain large-coverage lexical resources, as well as morphological and syntactic grammars. Dictionaries and grammars are applied to texts in order to locate morphological, lexical and syntactic patterns, remove ambiguities, and tag simple and compound words. INTEX can build lemmatized concordances of large texts from Finite-State or Context-Free grammars, and can accordingly perform transformation operations on texts in cascade, in order to annotate the text, or to generate paraphrases; these features, when applied in cascade, give INTEX the power of a Turing Machine. INTEX is used as a linguistic platform, an information retrieval system, to teach second languages, as a terminological extractor, as well as to teach computational linguistics to students. NooJ, which uses a new technology, a new linguistic engine and a new interface, is meant to replace INTEX. NooJ's architecture was presented in the 5th INTEX Workshop (Marseille, June 2002) and its first alpha version was demoed at the 6th INTEX Workshop (Sofia, May 27-29 2003). As in the previous workshops (1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003), this meeting will be the opportunity for INTEX and NooJ users, as well as other researchers interested in NLP, to meet and to exchange their experience of development, research or teaching. It tries to establish a generic framework to allow morphosyntactic annotations for various kinds of documents, various tagsets and various languages. After a first presentation last year at COLING'03, the proposal will now be presented and discussed during the next TC37SC4 meeting to be held on May 24-25 at Lisbon, just before LREC'04. Because such an annotation framework would benefit the whole NLP community and should therefore get the largest possible consensus, we would like to invite all interested people to browse the current draft, send feedback before (and after) the TC37SC4 meeting and/or attend this meeting. We expect feedback on the current draft as well as examples (tagsets, annotation frameworks, annotated sentences) illustrating the potential weaknesses of the current proposal. Later, MTT was supplemented by the theory of integrated linguistic description and systemic lexicography by Jury Apresjan. This theory focuses on the coordinated description of the grammar and the lexicon and establishing multi-faceted systemic links on a dictionary-wide scale. In recent years, MTT has largely internationalized and has now active supporters in many countries. It has diverse interconnections with other current theories and approaches, such as LFG, HPSG, Tree-Adjoining Grammar, Functional Grammar, Word Grammar. Fruitful links have emerged between MTT and lexicography, typology, language teaching and computational linguistics. The objective of MTT-2005 is to bring together people working in MTT directly and those working in other frameworks and willing to relate their approach to MTT. The First conference on the MTT linguistics took place in 2003 at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris and attracted 32 contributions from researchers of 14 countries. MTT-2003 Proceedings are available at http://mtt2003.linguist.jussieu.fr/. We expect to discuss a wide range of topics related to the elaboration of formal models of natural languages. In particular, we welcome submissions on the following topics: ... Modelling of various levels of linguistic representation (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics) ... Interaction between grammar and dictionary. Types of lexical and grammatical meanings and their interaction ... Semantic types of predicate words ... Valences, actants and semantic roles ... The theory of lexical functions ... Lexicography and terminography ... Mathematical aspects of MTT ... MTT and language learning ... Computational implementation of MTT ... Use of MTT in NLP applications. Computer demos are encouraged. The actual length of the presentation will depend on the number of proposals accepted, but participants should reckon on 25-30 minute presentations plus 10 minutes for discussion. The final arrangement will be communicated together with the abstract acceptance notification. PROGRAM The program will consist of several invited talks, regular presentations and computer demos. We have already received consent to give an invited talk from Juri Apresjan, Igor Mel'_uk and Elena Paducheva. We expect a few more invited speakers to give their consent. SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS Abstracts of talks should not exceed 3000 words (about 6 pages) including examples and references. The front page should contain the title but no author name. Include a separate page with the author's name, email address, and institutional affiliation. The languages of the presentations at the conference will be English and Russian. The abstracts should be sent by e-mail as an attachment (Word or PDF format) to: mtt2005 at cl.iitp.ru The formatting requirements for the publication will be provided with the notification of acceptance. Such databases are now felt indispensable in language science with the advances of language engineering. Like databases in genomics, multilingual lexical databases need rich annotations; they are complex, and they evolve as time goes by. The Papillon project is a Web collaborative project with the aim to build an open source multilingual lexical database for several languages (French, German, English, Japanese, Lao, Malay, Thai and Vietnamese). The provided lexical information has to be rich enough for a human to be able to query and generate his/her own tailored dictionary (e.g. for language learning or for translation work) and for NLP applications to be able to extract a whole range of data or to directly exploit some particular data. The 2004 Papillon workshop, the fifth in a series of workshops organized every year by the Papillon members, will aim at identifying problems relevant to the multilingual-lexical-database community. The workshop aims to promote exchanges between practitioners from several fields and is thus open to anybody working in a domain pertaining to lexical databases such as: databases, man-machine interface for dictionaries, data annotation, XML, standardization of dictionaries or lexical data; lexicography, translation, computational linguistics, etc. This workshop is open and particularly encourages submissions by researchers from outside the Papillon project. The "Papillon 2004" workshop particularly welcomes general submissions on the following topics: (i) Aspect: databases - Macrostructures for dictionaries and general architecture - Databases and lexical databases: differences and similarities - Query languages (XML, XQL, etc.) - Fast indexes and archiving techniques - Standards for lexical databases (ii) Aspect: lexical data - Microstructures of lexical entries and linguistic specifications - Reuse or automatic production of dictionaries - Automatic feeding of lexical databases - Internationalization/localization of multilingual lexical data - Integration of multimodal information and meta-information - Interaction between lexical data and linguistic data (corpora, examples, illustrations, etc.) (iii) Aspect: human use - New ways of dictionary lookup - Interfaces for querying dictionaries, user-friendliness - Legal aspects of dictionaries (copyright, etc.) - Adequation/inadequation of existing distionnary to certain users (iv) Aspect: NLP use - NLP systems using lexical databases - Direct use of dictionaries in NLP systems - Building lexical data sets for specific applications - Interchangeability of lexical data - Neutrality of NLP systems with regard to lexical data The workshop will also accept submission on aspects more specific to the Papillon project Meaning-text theory and lexicography - Linguistic problems - Composing semantic formulae for lexies - Practical problems in indexing specifing entries/lexies - Examples of lexies or axies Proposals for collaboration with the Papillon project - Query interfaces - Automatic Indexing - Contribution to the paradise, the purgatory, or the limbo Summary/state of collaboration to the Papillon project - Contribution to the paradise, the purgatory, or the limbo - Attractiveness of the Papillon Web site Collaborative work - Methods/services for lexical collaborative work - Motivations for voluntary contributers - Recognition and traceability of contributed work Contributions should not exceed 10 pages. PROGRAM The program will have a varied format, designed to maximize cross-fertilization among the various specialties, and to allow extended open discussion. Components of the program will include: - Tutorials on relevant models from linguistics, databases or annotation, e.g. the structure of lexical entries and semi-structured query languages; - Panel sessions on annotated text and lexicons (and possibly others); - Paper presentations reporting new research; - Demonstrations of systems for creating and/or managing lexical data. It will also be the occasion to present the recent developments of NooJ. Text theory (MTT) was proposed by Igor Mel'_uk about 40 years ago as a framework for describing natural language as a multi-level correspondence between the meanings and the texts with a strong emphasis on the dictionary. The First conference on the MTT linguistics took place in 2003 at the Ecole Normale Sup?rieure, Paris and attracted 32 contributions from researchers of 14 countries.
