Fondée en 1864, la Société Linguistique de Paris se donnait pour
objectif « l¹étude des langues », mais précisait dans ses statuts
qu¹elle n¹admettait « aucune communication concernant, soit l¹origine
du langage, soit la création d¹une langue universelle » (article
2). Au-delà de cette curieuse censure, ces deux questions se reposent
aujourd¹hui avec acuité dans les sciences du vivant et dans les
sciences du langage, notamment depuis l¹analyse du code génétique et
le séquençage du génome humain. Il faut alors reconsidérer la question
posée en 1968 par le biologiste François Jacob au linguiste Roman
Jakobson et à l¹anthropologue Claude Levi-Strauss : les références
linguistiques utilisées en génétique révèlent-elles de « simples
métaphores ou traduisent-elles des réalités plus profondes ? ».

Founded in 1864 in Paris, The French Society of Linguistics was
devoted to ³the study of languages² but explicitly mentioned in its
statutes that it ³will not allow any communications concerning either
the origin of language, or the creation of a universal language²
(article 2). Today, however, because the sequencing of DNA has
unlocked a sophisticated universal code for the livings, these two
questions should be addressed. We must reconsider the implications of
the question posed in 1968 by the biologist François Jacob to both the
linguist Roman Jakobson and the anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss:
are the linguistic references used in genetics revealing ³simple
metaphors or are they expressing deeper realities²?
