*Objectifs du colloque
---------------------

*Bien qu'il n'existe pas de consensus sur une définition commune des
concepts d'information et de communication, peu de gens peuvent
réfuter la thèse que l'information -- qu'elle soit considérée en tant
qu' « objet » ou en tant que « processus » - est une pré-condition
pour la connaissance. L'épistémologie est l'étude de la manière dont
les gens acquièrent des connaissances (acception anglo-saxonne) ou
l'étude de la manière dont les connaissances scientifiques sont créées
et validées (acception francophone). Adopter une position
épistémologique revient à prendre l'engagement de rendre compte de ce
qui constitue une connaissance ou en des termes procéduraux, à rendre
compte de quand quelqu'un peut prétendre savoir quelque chose. Une
théorie épistémologique impose donc des contraintes sur
l'interprétation de l'interaction cognitive humaine avec le monde. Il
va de soi que des théories épistémologiques différentes auront des
critères plus ou moins contraignants pour distinguer ce qui constitue
une connaissance de ce qui ne l'est pas. Si l'information est une
pré-condition pour acquérir la connaissance, alors rendre compte de la
manière dont la connaissance est acquise risque d'affecter notre
compréhension des concepts d'information et de communication. Alors
que de nombreuses études en Sciences de l'information et de la
communication (SIC) ont porté sur la définition des concepts
d'information - communication, peu de travaux ont établi des liens
explicites entre des conceptions théoriques différentes de ces
concepts et les positions épistémologiques sous-jacentes.  Ce colloque
sera l'occasion de réunir d'éminents spécialistes pour discuter de la
manière dont des disciplines scientifiques différentes perçoivent ces
deux concepts, sur les rapports information - communication et
connaissance et sur l'effet des différentes conceptions de ces deux
concepts sur la recherche interdisciplinaire.?  Ce colloque est une
des manifestations prévues dans le cadre du projet EPICIC financé par
l'ISCC (Institut des Sciences de la communication du CNRS) dans son
appel d'offres 2010, programme PIR Programme interdisciplinaire de
recherche) 2010. Le projet EPICIC est porté par un consortium
international de chercheurs issus de 4 équipes de recherche
(ELICO-Lyon3, iSchool of the University of Berkeley, iSchool of the
University of Illinois, Laboratoire L2C2-ISC Lyon). Le colloque a
également bénéficié du soutien financier de l'Université Lyon3 et du
soutien logistique de l'Association ISKO-France pour l'hébergement du
site web.

*Aims & Scope*
--------------

Although no consensus exists on a common definition of the concepts of
information and communication, few can reject the hypothesis that
information -- whether perceived as « object » or as « process » - is
a pre-condition for knowledge. Epistemology is the study of how we
know things (Anglo-Saxon meaning) or the study of how scientific
knowledge is arrived at and validated (francophone conception). To
adopt an epistemological stance is to commit oneself to render an
account of what constitutes knowledge or in procedural terms, to
render an account of when one can claim to know something. An
epistemological theory imposes constraints on the interpretation of
human cognitive interaction with the world. It goes without saying
that different epistemological theories will have more or less
restrictive criteria to distinguish what constitutes knowledge from
what is not. If information is a pre-condition for knowledge
acquisition, giving an account of how knowledge is acquired should
impact our comprehension of information and communication as
concepts. While a lot of work has been in Information & Communication
Sciences on the definition of these concepts, less research has
attempted to establish explicit links between differing theoretical
conceptions of these concepts and the underlying epistemological
stances.
This colloquium will gather eminent and renowned specialists from
different countries and with different backgrounds to discuss how they
and their corresponding disciplines perceive information &
communication, the relationship these two concepts share with
knowledge and how our comprehension of these two concepts affects
interdisciplinary research.
The colloquium is one of the events planned in the context of the
EPICIC project funded by the ISCC (Institut des Sciences de la
Communication du CNRS). The EPICIC project is led by an international
consortium of researchers from the following institutions:
ELICO-Lyon3; iSchool of the University of Berkeley; iSchool of the
University of Illinois; The L2C2 research team of the Institute for
Cognitive Sciences, CNRS-Lyon).  The colloquium also received some
funding by the University of Lyon3 and logistic support from
ISKO-France association for hosting the web site.
