*John M. Swales is Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at the University
of Michigan, where he was also Director of the English Language
Institute from 1985 to 2001. He was faculty advisor for both the MICASE
and MICUSP corpus projects. To date, he has written or co-written over
20 books and a hundred research articles or book chapters. His 1990
Genre Analysis (Cambridge, 1990) continues to be one of the most
frequently cited works on academic discourse, and has inspired and
empowered generations of students and researchers to** systematise**
their observations about academic texts. Other significant works
include Academic Writing for Graduate Students(with Christine Feak)
(Michigan, 1994, 2004), Other Floors, Other Voices (Erlbaum, 1998) and
Research Genres (Cambridge, 2004). Although officially retired, he
remains active with research projects, doctoral advising, and conference
presentations (typically plenaries). In 2011, for example, he gave talks
and lectures in England, Italy, Poland and China as well as in the
U.S. In 2004, he was awarded an honorary PhD by the University of
Uppsala.*
