PhD Position in Natural Language Processing for Machine Translation
(OP-20131220-162332)

NLP Group, Idiap Research Institute, Martigny, Switzerland

Description:

Applications are invited for a PhD position in natural language
processing applied to machine translation, in the context of the MODERN
project headed by Idiap, with partners in Zurich, Geneva and Utrecht
(www.idiap.ch/project/modern) funded by the Swiss National Science
Foundation. The overall goal of the project is to model discourse
entities and relations for improving MT.

The goal of the doctoral thesis, within MODERN, will be to design a
probabilistic model of text-level coreference and anaphora resolution,
in relation to discourse structure. The model will take advantage of
rich semi-structured resources and semantic relatedness measures, along
with insights on the interplay between referential and discursive
relations. The model will be implemented and tested both intrinsically,
on coreference tasks for English and a second language, and
extrinsically, in combination to machine translation. Work on this
latter aspect will involve collaboration with a postdoc in MT.

Candidates should have a strong background in computer science, and good
knowledge of natural language processing, in particular of statistical
methods based on machine learning. They should have strong programming
skills (e.g. in Python, Perl, Java or C/C++) as well as good knowledge
of English as a working language. Knowledge of another language such as
French, German, or Dutch is an advantage. A strong academic record and a
clear aptitude for creative research will be priority selection
criteria.

The successful candidate will be registered as a PhD student in the EPFL
EDEE doctoral program, to which he/she will have to apply with support
from Idiap. The position is funded by the Swiss National Science
Foundation, with a maximum duration of four years.

Review of the applications will start immediately and will continue
until the position is filled. The starting date is March 2014, but later
dates can be considered as well.

How to apply:

Please fill in and submit your application through the Idiap online
recruitment system, by clicking on the position's title at
