Subject: Etymology: kloenen
Dear Ron Hahn,
as for the verb _klönen_, Wolfgang Pfeiffer in his Etymologisches
Wörterbuch des Deutschen (München: dtv, 1995) has the following:
"__klönen__ Vb. 'sich behaglich unterhalten, gemütlich plaudern'.
Das nd., daher vorwiegend im Nordd. gebrauchte Verb bedeutet
'mit durchdringender Stimme reden', im 18. Jh. dann 'anhaltend
jammern, klagen' und 'weitschweifig reden'. _klönen_ ist
lautmalender Herkunft und vergleichbar mit nl. _kleunen_ 'klopfen,
schlagen', afries. _klinna_ 'klingen, schallen', _klann_ 'Klang',
aengl. _clynnan_ 'tönen, klopfen', für die alle eine
Ausgangsbedeutung 'Ton, Schall, Geräusch machen' anzunehmen
ist."
Kind regards,
L.K.
