From: Roger P. G. Thijs [roger.thijs at village.uunet.be]
Subject: diets
The forms of "Diets" in early Dutch:
Thiado, gentium
Thiadon, nationes
Thiade, gente
Thiat, gens
Thiede, gentes
as to J. Lipsius in "Poliorceticon...", Antwerp, 1596, of which a page is
reproduced in:
in A4 with 2 cols .
This booklet was one of te two hand-outs at the "Symposium Tesi Samanunga",
held today in Bilzen.
The other booklet was:
Tesi Samanunga, Symposium Bilzen en de oudste bronnen van het Nederlands,
Lezingen gehouden te Bilzen op 11 december 1999, Heemkundekring Bilisium, 56
pp. in A4 with 2 cols, with contributions:
- 1 - Theo Coun, Historisch overzicht van de studie van de oudste Limburgse
teksten in de volkstaal, pp. 7-18
(comment: more than 50% of the material in Old-Dutch (pre-medieval Dutch)
found and collected in the "Corpus" by Gysseling is related to the abbey of
Munsterbilzen in Belgian Limburg)
a sample of Old Dutch (Munsterbilzen) from the Wachtendonkse psalmen:
- Misdadi wie virnimit? fan beholenen minin gereini mi, in fan fremethon
ginathe schalke thinin.
versus 1475 Dutch (Hasselt):
- Wie verstaet die ontblivene? Reynighe mi van minin heymeliken sonden ende
spare dinen knecht vande vreemden.
and versus the Statenbijbel 1637
Segers is, with others, working on a dictionnary of pre-medieval
(Limburgian) Old-Dutch.
(Goossens is prof. emeritus of the universities of Leuven, Belgium, and
Münster, Westphalia; he pubished many articles about the Limburgian
language)
It concerns just a small 2-liner, written in 1130 (on some free space in an
evangelarium of the 9th century, in latin), below a list of the members of
the abbey of Munsterbilzen:
Tesi samanunga vvas edele unde scona.
& omniv(m) virtutu(m) plenit(er) plena.
(In modern Dutch:
Deze gemeenschap was edel en schoon,
En volledig veruld van alle deugden)
The 9th century evangelarium is property of the "fraters bollandisten" of
Brussels and is of the hand of the very same Samuhel ("indignus diaconus" at
the time of the manuscript), who wrote also the Quedlimburg evangelarium
later (as "indignus vocatus presbyter", curiosity: he still made the very
same errors versus the latin language). Curiosity about the latter
manuscript: the Quedlimburgian evangelarium was stolen by an American
soldier from Whitewright, Texas, in Quedlimburg, Germany, in April 1945.It
was finally bought back by the "Kulturstifting der Länder de Bundesrepublik
Deutschland" (at that time headed by the actual president of Germany,
J.Rau), for 3.000.000 USD in 1990.
Regards,
Roger
