Dear Ethan Barrett,
        The name is probably a form of "eldritch," which the Am. Heritage
Dict. suggests is aelf+rice, i.e, "elf-ric," where "ric, rice" = Reich, rijk,
kingdom, as in bishop-ric, thus "elf kingdom."  You are better off than I am,
in that my mother's maiden name, Erwin, has three possible etymologies (two
from Old English, one from Scots Gaelic).
