All,

I am new to the list and was wondering if you could recommend introductory
text(s) for learning German dialects that you have been speaking of these last
few threads.

I know this is a broad category, so whomever responds can suggest a book or two
in their language/dialect of expertise.

thanks in advance

Keith

Dear Keith,

On Lowlands-L we do occasionally mention German dialects, especially those that
are influenced by Low Saxon ("Low German"), the indigenous language of Northern
Germany, now finally officially recognized as a separate language from both
German and Dutch. However, German and its close relatives Lëtzebuergesh
(Luxemburgish) and Yiddish do not belong to the focus of Lowlands-L, even if we
mention them in various Lowlandic contexts. They are not what we consider
"Lowlands languages." Because of that we do not discuss them here in their own
right, except when there is a definite Lowlands connection. We have web pages
with introductory book lists for each Lowlands language. A German book list is
not among them.

If anyone wishes to respond to your request I ask them to do so off the List,
since this request is not relevant to Lowlands-L.

If by any chance you meant to say "Germanic" instead of "German," I refer you to
the Lowlands-L guides to offline beginners materials:

Best wishes,

Reinhard/Ron
