Actually an Ulster Scot (and probably a mainland Scot) goes to *the*
hospital too, providing it's on one occasion.
A gae tae tha spittle - I go to hospital (for one visit)
A gae tae spittle - I go to hospital (regularly, i.e. I probably work
there).
This is probably better demonstated by:
A gae tae tha kirk - I go to church (on one particular day)
A gae tae kirk - I go to church, i.e. I am a church-goer.
