Ted,

Yes, "while" (or "whiel" as I spell it) is used in Scots also meaning
"until". Apparently there was once a British signpost which read "STOP
WHILE
THE LIGHTS ARE GREEN" which had to be withdrawn because it was
misunderstood
in some areas. The Ulster-Scots Language Society motto is "Thole aye an
while poustie" - more or less "Keep going until you're strong".
