Subject: Little words
Re Pat's reference to the >>world-wide English usage ... "ultra-violet
through infra-red"<<: the usage continuum seems to have a discontinuity in
my vicinity because I don't recognise this.

It seems rather more logical to me that "reside" took on the meanings of
"stay" in more southern dialects after 1066 C.E. "Stay" is a derivative of
IE <sta>, to stand thence >L stare, > HG stehen, and >E "steed", "stall",
"stable", "state", "status", "establishment", etc, etc, etc. Or, possibly
as well, "stay" took on the permanence implied in "dwell" in some dialects.
