Subject: "ochtend"
Folk,
I received this mail from the Senior Lecturer in German at the University of
Newcastle in response to my request about "ochtend", as I was sure I
remembered him mentioning it in a lecture.
> Dear Ian,
>
> Yes, ochtend (as in ochtendbladeren, etc.) is a Germanic word. The cognate
> is Gothic uhtwo /u:xtwo:/ f(n) "dawn" and is composed of an ablaut
variant -
> i.e. the zero grade - of IE *nok't-, which appears in Gothic nahts etc.,
and
> a suffix *-wa: (sorry, no easy way of indicating vowel length or syllabic
> nasal in e-mail).

> Congratulations on your elevation to Director. May the funds follow! Nils
