Ye'r no quick eneuch, Sandy!

I gree at writin /z/ as <z> wad be a lot mair readable nor <ss> for /s/.

Aha - Sandy leukin for an airgument again!

(Ti repeat mysel for the ten-tae-the-nth time,) this depends whit ye mean
by 'phonemic'. Ti me, 'phonemic' juist means at onie ae spellin shoudna
represent mair nor ae phoneme, except whaur the'r regular dialect
variations, like wi UI. I canna see at this excludes conventions like at C
is sayed /s/ afore <i>, <e> an <y>. Coorse, the'r some irregular differs -
like atween /e/ an /E/ in words like _ferm_ - at naething can haundle.

I wad say at leukin for a spellin for Scots in onie ae principle is a waste
o heid-space. At a meinimum ye maun recognise at laest three kynds o spellins:

1. Etymological anes, like _nation_.

2. Morphological anes, like the -FU, -NA an -S plural endins.

3. Phonemic an diaphonemic anes, like maist consonants (in maist
circumstances); OO and/or OU; UI.

I seem ti mynd I'v haurd ye sayin muckle the same yersel!

Coorse, if ye'r speakin aboot ilka phoneme juist haein ae spellin, that's a
different thing aathegither. Oniewey, if Scots wis teached on a par wi
English that's whan ye wad need a phonemic system laest, cause aabodie wad
lairn hou ti say ilka word whan thay lairnt ti write thaim, juist like in
English.

John M. Tait.
