eten, hadden we soms een veel grotere stoof ven metaal met warme kolen erin;

[The following is in Low Saxon (Low German) and English.]
Leve Leeglanners,
Hamborg)? Ick will jümmers "Dracht" seggen, man ick weet nich, of dat richtig
is. Wo heett
düsse Hultstang in annere Spraken?

Dear Lowlanders,
This is about an old-time carrying device and its name, both in Low Saxon (Low
German) and other Lowlands languages. I want to call it _Dracht_ but am not
sure if this is correct. (_Dracht_ (< _dragt_ < /drag-d/) -- related to
/draag-/ 'to carry' -- also means (1) '(regional) costume' or (2) 'that which is
carried/borne (e.g., by vehicles, by beasts of burden, or by trees)').
Essentially, we are talking about a "glorified" version of what in Eastern Asia
tends to be simply a bamboo carrying pole that rests on one or both shoulders
(oftentimes on padding) and usually has at each end a suspended bucket or basket
in which goods are transported. (The Mandarin name of the carrying/shoulder
pole is _bian3dan_, sometimes _gang4bang4_.) The Lowlands version I know (from
Northern Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark) tends to be a carved wooden
plank-like device, much like a harness, that can only be carried with both
shoulders, with moulding for the shoulders and the back of the neck carved into
it for comfort. At both ends there tends to be a hook, with or without a chain,
and buckets or baskets are hung from it. (This device can be seen in the
picture of Hamborg/Hamburg's mascot, the water carrier known as "Hummel.")
Thanks for letting me know about the name(s) and regional versions of this
device.
Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
