Regarding Jorge's posting and "hurricane" I thought the following from
Chambers Etymological Dictionary was amusing:
`Kluge cites Mayan "hunraken" one leg, in reference to the handle of the Big
Dipper, the constellation that is most prominent during the hurricane
season. This possibility is, however, difficult to accept.'
In Britain the Big Dipper is called the Plough.
Interestingly, the word "dipper" meaning a utensil dates only from 1783, so
the US name for the stars in question is relatively recent.

Exactly. That indeed is what I meant. And Portuguese.

La casa es grande, pero tiene pocas camas. Tendrían que dormir en el piso,
igual que Sylvia y yo. Las piñas no faltarán.
Linguists are welcome, but if you are musicians, that's better yet. We have
two grand pianos, clarinet, flute, bassoon
and all the recorders. We love good music from the middle ages right up to the
present day and have a right good will to
play it.

So what is your theory? Where those English speakers aware that those were
"native" words, or did they borrow them as Sanish and Portuguese words?

¡Ningún problema! Sería muy acogedor.

Good for you! So I take it linguists with a love for medieval and renaissance
music are all the more welcome. I'd bring my recorders (the wooden type).
I vote for an international Lowlands-L conference in Southwestern Puerto Rico
when the northern weather turns unbearable again. (Oops! I forgot it already
has in Northern Europe ...)
