Obviously this is a more sensitive issue than I thought. I didn't expect to
have sarcasm directed at my punctuation!!
Why should a Frisian, who no doubt treasures his/her own language, object to
the way I speak mine?
As regards Ian's comment on "Dem Deutschen Volke", the motto over the
entrance to the Reichstag (parliament building) is of course a dedication
and means "_To_ the German People". I would guess that when this motto was
first put up, questions of ethnicity were not at the forefront of people's
minds. An artist called Haacke wants (among other things) to replace it with
"Der Bevölkerung" (~ "To the People") but part of this seems to relate to
the overtones of the word "Volk". (See www.tigros.de/net/index ).
