I some think ye'r missin the pynt here, Colin. It's no juist at we dinna
like the SNDA spellins - as gin personal preference wis aa at maitered -
it's the fact at presentin spoken Scots is juist exactly whit thay dinna
(canna? winna?) dae. At maist, thair uiss o UI is a donnert representation
o Central pronunciation. The only wey ye can get 'buik' an 'guid' ti hae
the same soond is ti pronunce thaim the _English_wey. Ti get awa wi this as
a representation o spoken Scots, ye wad hae ti say at UI is pronunced 'ai',
'i', 'ee' etc, except afore K an CH, whaur it's pronunced 'u', 'eu', etc.
As ye ken, tho, the SNDA disna dae this - in fact, thay dinna even allou UI
ti represent the NE 'ee' pronunciation, haudin at this is a variant at
shoud be spelt different - leuk at the innin ti the Scots School
Dictionary, whaur thay say at UI 'is pronounced' a certain wey in Central
an ither dialects, but 'does not occur' in the NE. Mairatower, gin ye leuk
up 'wood' an 'foot' i the English-Scots section o SSD, ye get as first
recommends _wuid_ an _fit_ respectively. Imagine yersel tryin ti lairn
Gaelic or Finnish on this foond, on yer ain.
John M. Tait.
