Thanks a lot for the sample children ditties posted today under "Online
resources," Sandy. It's terrific.
I noticed the word _kist_.
> On Tintock tap there is a mist,
> An in that mist there is a kist,
> An in that kist there is a caup,
> An in the caup there is a drap.
> Tak up the caup an drink the drap,
> An set the caup on Tintock tap!
My Scots dictionaries confirm my immediate assumption that it means
'chest', 'large box', 'trunk,' '(wooden packing) case', as it does in both
Dutch and Low Saxon (Low German) (also /kist/ in Afrikaans: singular _kis_,
plural _kiste_). I wonder if this is a Dutch loanword (considering
"Flemish" immigration to Scotland), or if it is perhaps a Low Saxon
loanword (considering apparent medieval connections between the Hanseatic
Trading League and Scottish ports).
(Anyone who replies to this, please do so under "Etymology," separate from
"Online resources.")
Thanks and regards,
Reinhard/Ron
