Dear Lowlanders,

Online I found a "cute, little" Low Saxon (Low German) interactive page for
children (and other beginners): _Dat Ollske un de Bigge_ ("The Old Woman and
the Pig"), which is also available for sale in book and CD form.  The story is
by the famous East Frisian writer Wilhelmine Siefkes.

I am mentioning this because I think many of our Lowlands-L subscribers will
find it interesting and useful.  This announcement is not meant to be
understood as endorsement or as commercial advertising.

You will hear an opening announcement in Low Saxon/Low German when you open
the page. You can click on individual icons to hear ("Dat is ...") the words
for the characters of the story.  You can click on the window, and the story
begins with animation and sound.  Whenever an episode ends, a computer mouse
icon appears, and when you click on it, the story continues.

Unlike the male speaker, the female speaker has a decidedly German accent
(e.g., uvular /r/, and [a:] instead of [Q:] for /aa/).

The dialect used is from Eastern Friesland.  This accounts for a number of
words that are unfamiliar to speakers of other dialects; e.g.,

            E. Friesl.   North Saxon          Mennonite "Plautdietsch"
'old woman' Ollske (n.)  O(o)l(d)sch(e) (f.)  ???
'pig'       Bigge (m.)   Swien (n.)           Schwien, Pukja (n.)
