Subject: New Euro news service / Frisian article

Eurolang (www.eurolang.net) is a service launched at the beginning of this
month. Updated daily, it provides up-to-date news of minority (minoritised?)
languages within the European Union. Initial impressions are good, and each
article is presented in both English and the minority language being
discussed.

The first article directly related to LOWLANDS-L is today's (Friday's)
article on 'Reluctant recognition for Frisian in Dutch parliament' to be
found at http://www.eurolang.net/news.asp?id=11

(I have no connection with Eurolang other than as an interested browser)

Subject: Online resources

Dear Nigel,

Thank you so very much for drawing our attention to this new online resource.
As soon as I can get around to it, I will add a link to the mentioned site
from our general list of links
(http://www.geocities.com/Athens/1615/rhahn/lowlands/links_general.htm).

I looked the site over briefly, and I am pleased about this addition.
However, I must admit that I am highly perturbed by the fact that Low
Saxon/Low German is not even as much as mentioned on the page dedicated to
Germany, even though I was happy to note that Romanes *is* now mentioned
(besides Danish, Frisian and Sorbian), that Scots is listed on the UK page,
and also that Low Saxon is mentioned in the context of the Netherlands, *with
an explanation to the effect that Low Saxon of that country is related to "Low

German" of Northern Germany*. So why then is Low Saxon/Low German missing on
the German page, just as it is on the pages of the European Bureau for Lesser
Used Languages (http://www.eblul.org/)? Is this a coincidence, or is there a
connection between the two that would explain the serious omission in both?
After all, "Low German" has been officially recognized in the eight North
German states for 13 months now. Does the omission go back to months, if not
years, of unexplained foot-dragging on the part of the German committee of
EBLUL? If that committee is guilty of indefinite waffling or even refusal to
act, then why has not at least the EBLUL leadership told them to get with the
program?

I am copying the EBLUL as well as the editor and the webmaster of Eurolang on
this and hope that one of them will be able to enlighten us regarding the
long-standing and unexplained non-representation of Low Saxon/Low German as an

official regional and thus lesser used language of Germany on a par with Low
Saxon of the Netherlands, both of which are for all intents and purposes one
and the same language, with far more speakers on the German side of the
border.

Regards,

Reinhard/Ron
