Subject: Written resources
I found quite some new stuff in recent days.
1. __Brabantish__ from Antwerp:
Before I start, I want to stress that Antwerpian people think their dialect
has a value above all languages and that it failed to become THE standard
for modern Dutch just through 16th century historical developments. All
languages different from Antwerpian are considered to be a barbaric meltpot.
In that light on has to understand the excerpt below from a short report in
the weekly "De Zondag" (is a paper one gets for free on sundays in all
Antwerpian bakeries):
Its a report about a burglary.
quote:
"De dieven zouden in het Limburgs of in het Nederlands "Meneer" geroepen
hebben."
endquote
So the thieves called "Sir" in a language the Antwerpian cannot distinguish
between Dutch and Limburgish, but it certainly did not sound Antwerpian.
New in the shops is:
_____Tom Rombouts & Bert Bevers, "Antwerps-Nederlands woordenboek", 1999,
ISBN 90-804539-3-5, Arthus, Antwerp, 108 pp.____
It comes out just a few weeks after:
_____Marcel c.j. Clement, "Idioticon van het Antwerps dialect", 1999, IBN
90-90134338-7, 124 pp.,___ for sale in the house of the author in Wilrijk (I
reported about it about a month ago)
and while the eleventh impression of:
_____Jaak de Graef, "Het Antwerps dialect van dezekestijd tot in de 21e
eeuw", elfde aangevulde en bewerkte druk, 1999, facet, Antwerpen, 320
pp.ISBN 90-5016-282-7_____
can be found on the bookshelves in all bookstores downtown Antwerp.
2. __Brabantish__ from Oostmalle.
While articles about the local language are part of virtually all magazines
about local history in Limburg, interest for the dialect starts to touch
also local historians in the "Kempen" area.
In the __Jaarboek 1999, Jaargang XX, Heemkundige Kring Malle, 208 pp.___
an extensive description pp. 149-197: __ Jos Van Breen, "Oostmals dialect:
Brabantse volkstaal"__.
3. I found today in the Fnac in Antwerp a new manual recommending a standard
orthography for writing in __Brabantish__:
__ Stichting Brabantse Dialecten & Noordbrabants Genootschap: Hoe schrijf ik
mijn dialect? Een referentiespelling voor alle Brabantse dialecten, Acco,
Leuven/ Amersfoort, ISBN 90-334-74378-3, 1999, 80 pp.___
It has sample texts (of 1 page each), in the correct orthography, from:
Noord Brabant: Cuijk, Gemert, Tilburg, Etten-Leur, Rosendaal
Antwerp (Central Brabant): Antwerpen, Boom, Mechelen
Vlaams Brabant (South Brabant): Asse, Gooik, Brussel, Ottenburg, Leuven,
Tienen
PS. Just for info: the standard for orthography, followed by Veldeke, for
writing in __Limburgish__ is still:
___Jan G. M. Notten, Aanwijzingen voor de spelling van de Limburgse
dialecten, 1983, Veldeke, 36 pp.___
4. In the Antwerp Fnac I also found a new __Flemish__ dictionnary:
___Dr. Frans Debrabandere, Kortrijks woordenboek, 1999, Kortrijk, De
Leiegouw, ISBN 90-76297-04-6, 553 pp.
5. Finally regarding the Romance languages in Belgium, it's easy to find
stuff about Walloon and Picard, it's difficult to find stuff about
__Gaumais__ (and virtually impossible to find stuff about the Champenois of
the Sugny area)
So I was gladly surprised to be informed about a new dictionnary:
___Georges Themelin: Dictionnaire Français-Lorrain, Patois de la Gaume,
1999, La Joyeuserie, No ISBN, 731 pp.___
Themelin is a schoolmaster, he is originated from Dampicourt (in the Gaume
area) and he sells the book from his home address.
Regards,
Roger
